Se evaluó la calidad física, fisiológica y vigor de un lote de semilla cv. Brennus. La semilla se dividió por tamaño (chica y grande) con un tamiz de 2.5 mm y se sometió a distintos acondicionamientos (envejecimiento y sin envejecimiento). Las variables de estudio fueron pureza de semilla (SP), peso de mil semillas (P1000S), peso volumétrico (PV), contenido de humedad (H), porcentaje de germinación, velocidad de emergencia, largo de la plúmula, materia seca en la plúmula e índice de vigor de plántula. El análisis de varianza se realizó bajo un diseño experimental completamente aleatorio con arreglo factorial y cuatro repeticiones. La comparación de medias se hizo mediante la prueba de Tukey (P &lt; 0.05). El lote presentó 98% SP, 1.8% de material inerte y 0.2% de otras semillas, el P1000S fue 42 g, PV 68 kg hL-1 y H fue 7%. Hubo diferencias estadísticas (P &lt; 0.05) entre tamaño de semilla, acondicionamiento de la semilla e interacción de ambos factores para la mayoría de las variables. Las semillas chicas y grandes sin envejecer presentaron similitud en su germinación, velocidad de emergencia, longitud de la plúmula e índice de vigor de la plántula. El tratamiento de envejecimiento tuvo un efecto negativo sobre estas variables sin importar el tamaño; sin embargo, se aprecia el daño más extenso sobre las semillas grandes. El lote de semilla posee calidad física, fisiológica y vigor deficiente.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Barley in Mexico is an important crop for the brewing industry and animal feed. The physical and physiological quality and vigor of a batch of seed cv. Brennus was evaluated. The seed was divided by size (small and large) with a 2.5 mm sieve and subjected to different conditioning (aging and non-aging). The study variables were seed purity (SP), thousand seed weight (P1000S), volumetric weight (PV), moisture content (H), germination percentage, emergence speed, plumule length, dry matter in the plumule and seedling vigor index. The analysis of variance was performed under a completely randomized experimental design with factorial arrangement and four replications. Means were compared using Tukey's test (P &lt; 0.05). The lot presented 98% SP, 1.8% inert material and 0.2% other seeds, P1000S was 42 g, PV 68 kg hL-1 and H was 7%. There were statistical differences (P &lt; 0.05) between seed size, seed conditioning and interaction of both factors for most variables. Small and large unaged seeds showed similarity in germination, emergence speed, plumule length and seedling vigor index. The aging treatment had a negative effect on these variables regardless of size; however, the most extensive damage was seen on the large seeds. The seed lot has poor physical and physiological quality and vigor.]]></p></abstract>
