En la lectura de Hickman y dada la concepción transaccional de la experiencia de Dewey, la tecnología se caracteriza por su capacidad de transformación del ambiente y del propio ser humano. Así, la perspectiva deweyana permitiría comprender a la tecnología en términos de instrumentos o herramientas. Más aún, según Hickman toda forma de investigación o deliberación tanto a nivel material como conceptual sería tecnológica dado su carácter instrumental. Una de las preguntas más acuciantes que abre esta interpretación es si la tecnología como instrumento está libre o cargada de valores tradicionalmente denominados extra-epistémicos. El objetivo de este artículo es señalar que desde el punto de vista de Dewey la tecnología no es un instrumento valorativamente neutral. Para ello, en primer lugar, se retoma la concepción deweyana de investigación y se exploran los distintos sentidos en que la tecnología es efectivamente instrumental. En segundo lugar, se analiza la tesis de la continuidad entre medios y fines y se afirma que estos últimos no pueden tomarse como términos aislados cuya carga valorativa queda disociada. En tercer lugar, se ofrece una lectura de los sentidos de tecnología como instrumento a la luz de la teoría de la valoración y de la experiencia de Dewey y se afirma que esta perspectiva promueve una reflexión política sobre los fines de la tecnología y los valores que la deberían orientar.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  According to Larry Hickman, the study of technological practices constitutes the basis of and provides the models for John Dewey&#8217;s philosophical project: the analysis and critique of human experience. From Hickman&#8217;s view and considering Dewey&#8217;s transactional concept of experience, technology transforms both environment and human beings. Thus, Deweyan perspective allows for understanding technology as an instrument or a tool. Even more, following Hickman any kind of inquiry or deliberation, both at a material or conceptual level, is technological because of its instrumental character. One of the most pressing questions introduced by such reading is whether technology as an instrument is value-free or value-laden. The main purpose of this article is to analyze the links between technology and values so as to claim that from Dewey&#8217;s point of view technology is not a value-free instrument. In order to achieve this goal, the article firstly recovers Dewey&#8217;s concept of inquiry and explores different senses in which technology is actually instrumental. Secondly, it analyses Dewey&#8217;s thesis about the continuity between means and ends and it claims that the latter cannot be considered as isolated elements whose valuative loan is dissociated. Thirdly, it offers a reading of the different senses of technology as an instrument in light of Dewey&#8217;s theory of valuation and experience and it claims that such standpoint allows and promotes a political reflection about the ends of technology and the values that should guide them.]]></p></abstract>
