El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar, a través de técnicas dendrocronológicas, el impacto de insectos descortezadores sobre el crecimiento radial en Pinus teocote (Pt) y Pseudotsuga menziesii (Pm). Para ello se analizaron núcleos de crecimiento de 52 árboles de Pt (26 sanos y 26 infestados) y 72 de Pm (36 sanos y 36 infestados), de dos sitios ubicados en la Sierra Madre Oriental. Los datos analizados fueron: ancho de anillo e índice del ancho de anillo, de toda la cronología, pero también antes y después de la aparición de la plaga. Mediante pruebas de t de Student se constrastó el ancho de anillo de árboles (sanos e infestados) antes y después del ataque de insectos descortezadores. El incremento radial acumulado en Pt fue mayor en árboles infestados (1.86 mm año-1) que en los individuos sanos (1.30 mm año-1); en Pm, los árboles sanos incrementaron más (3.01 mm año-1) que los infestados (1.81 mm año-1). Se concluye que cada especie responde de forma diferente al ataque de insectos descortezadores, y esto parece ser una forma de preservar la especie. La dendrocronología es una herramienta útil para evaluar la productividad de los bosques, ya que arroja datos precisos de edad e incremento anual de los árboles.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Dendrochronological studies allow the dating of important events that influence tree growth. The objective of this study was to compare through dendrochronological techniques, the impact of bark beetles on the radial growth in Pinus teocote (Pt) and Pseudotsuga menziesii (Pm). Increment cores of 52 trees of Pt (26 healthy and 26 infested) and 72 of Pm (36 healthy and 36 infested) were analyzed at two sites located in the Sierra Madre Oriental. The analyzed data were: ring width and ring-width index, of the whole chronology, but also before and after bark beetles were registered. Through t-Student tests, the ring width of trees (healthy and infested) was compared before and after the attack of the insects. The accumulated radial increase in Pt was higher in infested trees (1.86 mm year-1) than in healthy trees (1.30 mm year -1); in Pm, healthy trees increased more (3.01 mm year-1) than the infested ones (1.81 mm year-1). In conclusion, each species responds differently to the attack of bark beetle insects, and this seems to be a way of preserving the species. Dendrochronology is a useful tool for evaluating forest productivity as it yields accurate data on age and annual increase of trees.]]></p></abstract>
