</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract Since 2017, the United States has witnessed a notable increase in far-right activity, with economic decline often cited as the primary factor driving the radicalization of white communities. This study investigates the relationship between impoverishment and radicalization in the Rust Belt region. By analyzing the correlation between variations in the number of hate groups and a multidimensional index of impoverishment, we find a positive relationship between economic decline and the rise of far-right organizations. While our results confirm that economic downturns contribute to the growth of far-right movements, they also reveal that this is not the sole explanatory factor. We identify two additional peaks of far-right activity linked to specific political events, suggesting that economic decline is a significant but not exclusive driver of radicalization.
</abstract>
