</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract Federal climate policy in Canada raised the stakes when the Nationally Determined Contribution originally proposed in 2015 was updated in 2021. The update includes the goal of reaching zero net emissions by 2050, following the global tendency led by the United Nations and President Joe Biden’s United States. To fulfill these objectives, Canada’s federal government has designed several laws and programs. Nevertheless, implementation depends on the provinces. This article assumes that the provincial-level normative climate strategies are linked to their energy matrix and kind of economy, which leads to divergences among the provinces and with the federal government. Some provinces do not view this federal objective as a priority, and those that do design diverse climate instruments ranging from market-based to technological solutions. The aim of this article is to analyze Canada’s federal body of norms for reaching net-zero emissions and how this depends on the provinces’ climate strategies.
</abstract>
