En este trabajo se puso a prueba la existencia de patrones latitudinales de los caviomorfos actuales (fosoriales y no fosoriales) en el continente Americano. Se compilaron para cada especie, datos de longitud corporal, amplitud del área de distribución geográfica y punto medio de esta amplitud como medida de la distribución latitudinal, además de la riqueza de especies. Se construyeron modelos lineales generalizados para verificar el efecto de la latitud sobre estas variables. Se observó que el tamaño corporal de los caviomorfos fosoriales y la amplitud del área de distribución geográfica de todos los caviomorfos (fosoriales y no fosoriales) presentan una asociación negativa con la latitud. La distribución latitudinal de estos roedores no fue simétrica respecto al ecuador y se observó mayor riqueza de especies fosoriales entre los 16° y 48° S y de aquellas no fosoriales entre los 15° N y 25° S. Sugerimos que los patrones observados son el resultado de un conjunto de factores complejos como eventos geológicos y climáticos del pasado, heterogeneidad ambiental, interacciones bióticas y geografía del continente.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: It has been suggested for some taxa from the northern hemisphere, that body size and geographic range width, decrease from the poles to the Ecuador, where species richness increases. In this paper, the existence of latitudinal geographic patterns of the present caviomorphs (fossorial and non-fossorial) in the American continent was tested. For each specie, data of species body length, geographic range width, species richness and mid-point of the geographic ranges, which were considered as a measure of the latitudinal distribution, were compiled. To verify if there is an effect of latitude on these variables, generalized linear models were constructed. It was observed that body size of fossorial caviomorphs and the geographic range of caviomorphs (fossorial and no fossorial) have a negative association with latitude. The latitudinal distribution of these rodents was not symmetrical with respect to Ecuador and the greatest species richness of fossorial rodents was observed between 16° and 48° S and non fossorial between 15° N and 25° S. We suggest that the observed patterns are the result of a set of complex factors, such as: geological and climatic events of the past, environmental heterogeneity, biotic interactions and continent geography.]]></p></abstract>
