El incremento de enfermedades bucales indica la necesidad de un acercamiento integral a la promoción de la salud bucal.  Objetivo Determinar el estado de salud bucodental y necesidades de tratamiento de estudiantes de la carrera de Cirujano Dentista de la FES Iztacala, UNAM.  Material y métodos Estudio no experimental, comparativo y transversal sobre el total de la generación 2005-1. Se utilizó la Encuesta de Salud Bucodental (OMS).  Resultados 536 sujetos, con edades entre 17 y 44 años (media 19.15); 30% hombres y 70% mujeres. La mayoría presentó tejidos extraorales y mucosa sanos. La caries se presentó en 98.6% de sujetos. El CPO fue de 2.28, con valor mínimo de 0 y máximo de 6.25. Se encontraron diferencias significativas por sexo en el CPO, número de dientes sanos, obturados y perdidos, en favor de los hombres.  Conclusiones Se observa disminución del CPO, sin embargo la mayoría presenta dientes con caries y un incremento en la prevalencia de fluorosis dental y maloclusiones en relación a las encuestas anteriores.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Introduction Dental caries, periodontal disease, oral and pharyngeal cancer are considered the major global problems that affect oral health in most industrialized countries and the poorest communities in developing countries was said by the World Health Organization (WHO). The increase of oral diseases show the need of integral approach to promotion of oral health.  Objective Determine oral health and the need of treatment of dentist students at FES Iztacala, UNAM.  Material and methods Non-experimental, comparative and cross-sectional study with the whole 2005-1 generation was made. The WHO oral health survey was used.  Results 536 subjects between the ages of 17 to 44 were studied, (mean 19.15) 30% males and 70% females. Many of them had healthy extraoral and intraoral tissues. Caries were present in 98.6% of the subjects. DMF was 2.28, with a minimum of 0 and a maximus of 6.25. Significant differences by sex in DMF, number of healthy teeth, obtured, and lost were found, in all cases in favor of men.  Conclusion A decrease of DMF was observed, but many subjects had caries and an increase in prevalence of dental fluorosis and malocclusions.]]></p></abstract>
