The objective of this experiment was to determine skin reaction to horn fly load on grazing dairy cattle sprayed with a 20 % creosote bush (Larrea tridentata (DC.) Coville) leaf extracts solution. To evaluate skin reaction a 10-month heifer with six paired circles marked on her skin was used, five sprays at five-day interval were applied; response variables were any harmful effect on skin and hair. To evaluate horn fly load effects there were two treatments: spraying or not of a 20 % creosote bush leaf extract, with six and seven cows for the no-spray and sprayed treatments, respectively. Five sprays at eight-day interval were applied, horn fly load was determined nine times; t tests were done for each time. Hair tips in sprayed circles turned green without harmful effects. Leaf extract sprayed cows showed from 9.5 to 68 % reduction (p&#61603;0.05) in horn fly load compared to no-spray cows; however, not all the times horn fly count was registered, no-spray cows showed higher horn fly load than leaf extract sprayed cows. Spraying a 20 % creosote bush leaf extract showed some biological control of horn fly load with no skin harmful effects on grazing dairy cattle.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La mosca del cuerno (Haematobia irritans) es un parásito externo, con distribución amplia en el ganado en pastoreo. La integración de control biológico alternativo de esta plaga podría reducir el riesgo de resistencia a control químico. El objetivo de este experimento fue determinar la reacción epidérmica a la mosca del cuerno en vacas lecheras, en pastoreo, asperjadas con un extracto de gobernadora (Larrea tridentata (DC.) Coville) al 20 %. Para evaluar la reacción epidérmica se usó una vaquilla de 10 meses, con seis círculos pareados marcados en la piel y se aplicaron cinco aspersiones en intervalos de cinco días; las variables de respuesta fueron cualquier efecto nocivo en la piel y el pelaje. Para evaluar los efectos de la mosca del cuerno hubo dos tratamientos: la aspersión o no con un extracto de hoja de gobernadora al 20 %, con seis y siete vacas para los tratamientos sin y con aspersión, respectivamente. Cinco aspersiones se aplicaron en intervalos de ocho días y la incidencia de la mosca del cuerno se determinó nueve veces. La prueba de t se realizó en cada caso. Las puntas del pelo en los círculos asperjados se tornaron verdes sin efectos nocivos. Las vacas asperjadas con el extracto de hojas mostraron reducción de 9.5 a 68.0 % (p&#61603;0.05) en la incidencia de mosca del cuerno comparadas con las no asperjadas; sin embargo, no todas las veces se registró la incidencia de la mosca del cuerno, y las vacas sin asperjar mostraron una mayor incidencia de mosca del cuerno que las vacas asperjadas. La aspersión del extracto de hoja de gobernadora al 20 % muestra cierto control biológico de la incidencia de la mosca del cuerno sin efectos perjudiciales en la piel del ganado lechero en pastoreo.]]></p></abstract>
