<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1405-31952006000100059&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S1405-31952006000100059&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S1405-31952006000100059&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Se tomaron registros de 326 corderos Hampshire, 97 Dorset y 88 Suffolk durante cuatro pruebas de comportamiento, para evaluar en cada prueba el peso final (PF), la ganancia diaria de peso (GDP) y la conversión alimenticia (CALIM) y, al término de cada prueba, el espesor de grasa dorsal del área del músculo del lomo (EGAML), profundidad del área del músculo del lomo (PAML), y área del músculo del lomo (AML). Las pruebas duraron 75 d, de los cuales 15 correspondieron a la fase de adaptación. Los corderos se alojaron en corraletas individuales y recibieron una alimentación y manejo similar. La EGAML, PAML y AML se midieron por medio de ultrasonido entre la 11a y 12a costillas. El análisis estadístico se efectuó con el procedimiento GLM de SAS. El modelo incluyó los efectos fijos de año de prueba (2000-2003), mes de nacimiento (periodo 1 y 2), raza del cordero (Hampshire, Dorset y Suffolk), unidad de producción (1-6), tipo de nacimiento (sencillo y múltiple), edad de la madre (1-3+ años), más las interacciones de primer orden significativas y el peso vivo al inicio de la prueba (anidado dentro de raza) como covariable. Se encontraron diferencias (p&#8804;0.05) entre razas para PF, GDP, CALIM, EGAML y AML. Los pesos finales de los corderos Suffolk, Hampshire y Dorset fueron 66.0±1.4 kg, 64.4±0.8 kg y 59.2±0.8 kg. La GDP fue mayor en los corderos Hampshire (0.45±0.01 kg) que en los Suffolk (0.42±0.02 kg) y Dorset (0.37±0.01 kg). Los corderos Hampshire tuvieron una mejor CALIM (3.9±0.1) con respecto a los Dorset (4.6±0.1) y Suffolk (5.8±0.2). Los corderos Suffolk tuvieron mayor EGAML (8.3±0.5 mm) que los Dorset (5.2±0.3 mm) y Hampshire (5.0±0.3 mm). Para AML, los promedios fueron 15.1±1.0, 14.4±0.6 y 13.3±0.6 cm2 para los corderos Suffolk, Hampshire y Dorset. Hubo diferencias (p&#8804;0.05) en GDP y CALIM debidas al mes de nacimiento; los corderos nacidos en el periodo 2 tuvieron mejor GDP y CALIM (0.43±0.01 kg y 4.6±0.1) que los nacidos en el periodo 1 (0.40±0.01 y 4.9±0.1). La edad de la madre afectó únicamente el EGAML (p&#8804;0.05); los corderos hijos de ovejas de un año de edad tuvieron el menor promedio (5.7±0.2 mm), comparados con corderos hijos de madres de 2 y 3 ó más años de edad (6.4±0.1 mm). Los corderos Hampshire tuvieron los mejores promedios para las variables analizadas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Data on 326 Hampshire, 97 Dorset and 88 Suffolk lambs in four performance tests were used to evaluate final weight (FW), average daily weight gain (ADG) and feed conversion (FC) and, at the end of each test, loin muscle backfat thickness (LMFT), loin muscle depth area (LMDA) and loin muscle area (LMA). The tests lasted 75 d; the first 15 d was an adaptation phase. Lambs were penned individually and kept under the same feed and management system. LMFT, LMDA, AND LMA were measured between the 11th and 12th ribs with ultrasound procedures. Statistical analysis was performed using the GLM procedure of SAS. The model included the fixed effect of year (2000-2003), month of birth (period 1 and 2), breed (Hampshire, Dorset, Suffolk) production unit (16), type of birth (single, multiple), age of ewe (1-3+ years), as well as first-order significant interactions and body weight at the start of the test (nested within breed) as a covariable. There were differences (p&#8804;0.05) among breeds for FW, ADG, FC, LMFT and LMA. Suffolk lambs had a FW of 66.0±1.4 kg, followed by Hampshire (64.6±0.8 kg) and Dorset (59.2±0.8 kg) lambs. ADG was higher for Hampshire (0.45±0.01 kg) than for Suffolk (0.42±0.02 kg) and Dorset (0.37±0.01) lambs. Hampshire lambs had better FC (3.9±0.1) than Dorset (4.6±0.1) and Suffolk (5.8±0.2) lambs. Suffolk lambs had a higher LMFT (8.3±0.5 mm) than Dorset (5.2±0.3 mm) and Hampshire (5.0±0.3 mm) lambs. For LMA, averages were 15.1±1.0, 14.4±0.6, and 13.3±0.6 cm2, for Suffolk, Hampshire and Dorset lambs. Differences (p&#8804;0.05) were found for ADG and FC due to month of birth; lambs born in period 2 had better ADG and FC (0.43±0.01 kg and 4.6±0.1) than those born in period 1 (0.40±0.01 kg and 4.9±0.1). Age of ewe affected only LMFT (p&#8804;0.05); lambs born from one-year-old ewes had the lowest average (5.7±0.2 mm) compared with lambs born of two and three-year-old ewes (6.4±0.1 mm). Hampshire lambs had the best averages for the variables analyzed.]]></p></abstract>
