El objetivo de este estudio fue definir los tratamientos que promueven la germinación en semillas de cinco especies del MET con latencia física. Las especies estudiadas fueron: Ebenopsis ebano, Havardia pallens, Parkinsonia aculeata, Prosopis laevigata y Vachellia farnesiana. Se recolectó semilla en poblaciones naturales y de individuos fenotípicamente superiores. Se examinaron tratamientos de escarificación que consistieron en diferentes tiempos de inmersión en peróxido de hidrógeno, agua hirviendo y ácido sulfúrico, además de un tratamiento testigo. El ensayo se realizó en cajas Petri con papel filtro dentro de una cámara de germinación en condiciones controladas de humedad y temperatura. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar con cuatro repeticiones de 50 semillas por especie. La germinación se contabilizó durante 16 días considerando la emergencia de la radícula de 1 cm de longitud. Se determinó el porcentaje de germinación y se construyeron curvas de germinación acumulada. Se realizó un análisis de varianza y las medias se compararon con la prueba de Tukey a un nivel de significancia de 0.05. Hubo diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos en todas las especies evaluadas. Cada tratamiento tuvo un efecto diferente en función de la especie, destacándose que en la mayoría como es el caso de E. ebano, H. pallens, P. laevigata y V. farnesiana funcionaron los tratamientos con ácido sulfúrico, pero con diferente tiempo de inmersión (5 o 25 min). En P. aculeata la germinación se incrementó sumergiendo las semillas en agua hirviendo durante 5 minutos. Estos resultados tienen implicaciones prácticas para mejorar el manejo de las semillas de las especies estudiadas en los proyectos de restauración o reforestación en el MET.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Many forest species of the Tamaulipan Thornscrub (MET) present seed germination problems that limit seedling propagation in nurseries for use in restoration or reforestation projects. The objective of this study was to define the treatments that promote germination in seeds of five MET species with physical dormancy. The species studied were: Ebenopsis ebano, Havardia pallens, Parkinsonia aculeata, Prosopis laevigata and Vachellia farnesiana. Seed was collected from natural populations and from phenotypically superior individuals. Scarification treatments consisting of different immersion times in hydrogen peroxide, boiling water and sulfuric acid were examined, in addition to a control treatment. The trial was carried out in Petri dishes with filter paper inside a germination chamber under controlled conditions of humidity and temperature. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four replicates of 50 seeds per species. Germination was counted for 16 days considering the emergence of the 1 cm long radicle. The germination percentage was determined, and cumulative germination curves were constructed. Analysis of variance was performed, and means were compared with Tukey's test at 0.05 significance level. There were significant differences among treatments in all species evaluated. Each treatment had a different effect depending on the species, highlighting that in most of them, as is the case of E. ebano, H. pallens, P. laevigata and V. farnesiana, the treatments with sulfuric acid worked, but with different immersion times (5 or 25 min). In P. aculeata germination was increased by immersing the seeds in boiling water for 5 min. These results have practical implications for improving seed management of the species studied in restoration or reforestation projects in the MET.]]></p></abstract>
