This research aimed to determine the optimal Steiner NS concentration for biomass production in Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare L. ssp. hirtum [Link] Ietswaart), and to quantify its nutritional requirement of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. A completely randomized design was established with five treatments and five replicates. The treatments were different NS concentrations: 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 %. The experimental unit consisted of five bags (20 x 20 cm) with substrate (tezontle: 3 to 10 mm in diameter), with one plant each. The fresh and dry aerial matter and the concentration of N, P and K in the different samples were determined. The results showed significant statistical difference in the five variables. The highest fresh and dry matter production was obtained with the 50 and 75 % NS concentrations. While the lower concentrations did not meet the crop&#8217;s nutrient demand, the higher concentrations significantly decreased biomass production. The 50 % NS can be used in commercial hydroponic oregano production. The nutritional requirement of this crop is: 4.76 kg of N, 0.70 kg of P and 5.10 kg of K, per ton of fresh matter.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La concentración de la solución nutritiva (SN) en sistemas de cultivo sin suelo influye en la acumulación de biomasa aérea y contenidos nutrimentales. La presente investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la concentración de SN de Steiner óptima para la producción de biomasa en orégano griego (Origanum vulgare L. ssp. hirtum [Link] Ietswaart), y cuantificar su requerimiento nutrimental de nitrógeno, fósforo y potasio. Se estableció un diseño completamente al azar con cinco tratamientos y cinco repeticiones. Los tratamientos fueron diferentes concentraciones de la SN: 25, 50, 75, 100 y 125 %. La unidad experimental consistió en cinco bolsas (de 20 x 20 cm) con sustrato (tezontle: 3 a 10 mm de diámetro), con una planta cada una. Se determinó la materia aérea fresca y seca, y la concentración de N, P y K en los diferentes muestreos. Los resultados mostraron diferencia estadística significativa en las cinco variables. La mayor producción de materia fresca y seca se obtuvo con las concentraciones 50 y 75 % de SN. Mientras que, las concentraciones inferiores no abastecieron la demanda nutrimental del cultivo, y las superiores disminuyeron la producción de biomasa significativamente. La SN al 50 % se puede utilizar en la producción comercial hidropónica de orégano. El requerimiento nutrimental de este cultivo es: 4.76 kg de N, 0.70 kg de P y 5.10 kg de K, por tonelada de materia fresca.]]></p></abstract>
