Con el objetivo de precisar su localización en esta región, hemos realizado un modelo 2D de resistividad eléctrica a partir de datos magnetotelúricos adquiridos en 16 sondeos a lo largo de un transecto de orientación NE-SO y ~175 km de longitud, desde la localidad de Puerto Peñasco en la costa norte de Sonora (México), hasta las inmediaciones de Ajo en el suroeste de Arizona (EUA). El modelo generado revela importantes rasgos de la corteza en el área de estudio. En primer lugar, el elevado contraste entre la conductividad eléctrica de la corteza inferior y la parte superior del manto ha permitido visualizar el &#8220;Moho eléctrico&#8221;, que es similar al estimado por otros métodos geofísicos en trabajos previos. En segundo lugar, la combinación de cambios en la geometría de los cuerpos eléctricos y la marcada variación lateral de la resistividad a lo largo del perfil permite dividirlo en dos secciones, cuyo límite se sitúa en las sierras de Quitobaquito (Arizona), muy cerca de la línea fronteriza. La sección suroccidental es notablemente menos resistiva en promedio que la nororiental y está atravesada por una serie de estrechos cuerpos conductivos transcorticales de elevado buzamiento, que proponemos están relacionados con fallas laterales que cortan una corteza atenuada. En cambio, la sección nororiental carece de este tipo de cuerpos eléctricos, es menos heterogénea y no se han podido definir con claridad estructuras tectónicas en ella. No obstante, la geometría de dos grandes cuerpos resistivos que conforman gran parte de esta sección sugiere la existencia de fallas lístricas que enraízan en la corteza media-inferior. Interpretamos que la sección suroccidental corresponde a la provincia tectónica del Golfo de California y la nororiental a la provincia de Cuencas y Sierras (Basin and Range). El límite propuesto entre ambas provincias cenozoicas se sitúa en un área estructuralmente compleja en la que se han reportado previamente otros límites tectónicos más antiguos (zona de sutura paleoproterozoica Yavapai-Mazatzal), así como grandes estructuras de diferentes edades (Megacizalla Mojave Sonora del Jurásico Superior, sistema de cabalgaduras larámides de Quitobaquito). De ello se desprende la importancia de la herencia geológica en la localización del límite nororiental del moderno rift del Golfo de California en la sección estudiada.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The eastern limit of the Gulf of California rift is poorly defined, especially at its northern end in the Mexico-US transborder area. In order to define its location in this region, we have generated a 2D electrical resistivity model from magnetotelluric data acquired at 16 stations along a NE-SW-oriented transect, approximately 175 km long, from Puerto Peñasco on the northern coast of Sonora, Mexico, to the vicinity of Ajo in southwestern Arizona, USA. The model reveals important features of the crust in the study area. First, the significant contrast in electrical conductivity between the lower crust and the upper mantle allows visualizing the electric Moho, which is consistent with estimates from other geophysical methods in previous studies. Secondly, the combination of changes in the geometry of the electrical bodies and the marked lateral variation in resistivity along the transect allows dividing it into two sections, with the boundary located near the Quitobaquito Hills in Arizona, close to the border. The southwestern section is notably less resistive on average than the northeastern section and is traversed by a series of narrow, highly dipping transcrustal conductive bodies which are related to strike-slip faults cutting through a thinned crust. In contrast, the northeastern section lacks these types of electrical bodies, is also less heterogeneous, and tectonic structures in this section are not clearly defined. However, the geometry of two large resistive bodies that make up a significant portion of this section suggests the presence of listric faults rooted in the mid-lower crust. We interpret that the southwestern section corresponds to the Gulf of California tectonic province and the northeastern section to the Basin and Range province. The proposed boundary between these two Cenozoic provinces is located in a structurally complex area where older tectonic boundaries have been previously reported (Yavapai-Mazatzal Paleoproterozoic suture zone), as well as large structures of different ages (Upper Jurassic Mojave-Sonora Megashear, Paleocene Quitobaquito Hills thrust system). This underscores the importance of the geological inheritance on the localization of the northeastern boundary of the modern Gulf of California rift in the studied section.]]></p></abstract>
