<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1026-87742005000300358&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S1026-87742005000300358&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S1026-87742005000300358&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN El Lago de Chapala, ubicado en el occidente de México dentro del Rift Citala, está caracterizado por su actividad geotérmica, la cual incluye manantiales termales terrestres y sublacustres, halos de alteración hidrotermal, depósitos carbonatados tipo sínter y volcanes de lodo. Dentro del Lago de Chapala existen tanto manantiales sublacustres como emanaciones de asfalto que constituyen isletas. Los hidrocarburos que se generan en zonas con actividad geotérmica, continentales y marinas tienen un origen hidrotermal, ya que el agente causante de la alteración de la materia orgánica así como de la transferencia de masa es el agua caliente circulante en el sistema hidrotermal. Por ello, este tipo de hidrocarburo se denomina petróleo hidrotermal (PH). Los análisis del PH del Lago de Chapala, obtenidos por cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas (GC-MS), muestran que está formado por hidrocarburos saturados que incluyen una mezcla compleja amorfa de hidrocarburos cíclicos y ramificados (UCM). Los biomarcadores maduros, derivados de la microbiota lacustre (algas), consisten principalmente de hopanos 17&#945;(H),21&#946;(H) desde C27 hasta C34 (sin C28); gammacerano, terpanos tricíclicos (C20-C26, sin C22); carotano y sus productos de cracking primario; esteranos C28 y C29; y drimanos (C14-C16). El PH de Chapala no contiene hidrocarburos policíclicos aromáticos (PAH) ni n-alcanos. La composición de este PH no corresponde a residuos de petróleo convencional biodegradado. Por carecer tanto de n-alcanos como de isoprenoides y por la presencia de UCM, hopanos, esteranos y biomarcadores carotenoides, su composición es similar al PH reportado del Rift del Este de África y consistente con una generación rápida de hidrocarburos. Por lo tanto se infiere que el PH del Lago de Chapala fue generado rápida-mente a partir de materia orgánica lacustre a una temperatura inferior a la requerida para el cracking primario, por hidrotermalismo, de los alcanos a partir del kerógeno (&lt;250 ºC). Se estima que, después de formado, el PH del Lago de Chapala fue forzado tectónicamente hasta el lecho del lago desde una profundidad estimada entre 300 y 500 m, en donde los sedimentos tienen una edad &gt;40 ka (14C). El carbono total del PH del Lago de Chapala tiene una media &#948;13CPDB de -21.4 &#8240; que es un valor típico para materia orgánica lacustre. La ocurrencia de PH en sistemas de rifts continentales está plenamente comprendida y, debido a su potencial, debe de ser considerada como blanco a evaluar en la exploración futura de recursos energéticos en estos sistemas tectónicos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Lake Chapala, located in the Citala Rift in western Mexico, is characterized by its active and fossil geothermal activity, which includes terrestrial and sublacustrine hot springs, alteration halos, carbonated sinter deposits and mud volcanoes. Sub-lacustrine hot springs and asphalt emanations that constitute islets coexist in the lake. Oil generated in geothermic zones has an hydrothermal origin because circulating hot water generates both thermic alteration of organic matter and mass transference. For this reason, this oil is named hydrothermal petroleum (HP). Analyses by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of the HP from Lake Chapala show that it consists of mature biomarkers and an unresolved complex mixture of branched and cyclic hydrocarbons (UCM). The mature biomarkers, derivated from lacustrine microbiota, consist mainly of 17&#945;(H),21&#946;(-H)-hopanes from C27 to C34 (no C28); gammacerane, tricyclic terpanes (C20-C26, no C22); carotane and its cracking products; C28 and C29 steranes and drimanes (C14-C16). The hydrothermal petroleum of the Chapala Lake does not contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) nor n-alkanes. The composition of this HP does not fit with conventional biodegraded petroleum residues. The absence of n-alkanes and isoprenoids and presence of UCM, mature hopanes, steranes and carotenoid biomarkers are consistent with rapid hydrothermal oil generation, similar to hydrothermal petroleum from the East African Rift. We propose that the HP from Lake Chapala was generated rapidly from lacustrine organic matter at temperatures below that required for hydrothermal cracking of alkanes from kerogen (250 ºC). The hydrothermal petroleum of Lake Chapala was forced by tectonic activity to the lake bed, from a depth estimated in 300-500 m, where the sediments have 14C ages &gt;40 ka. The bulk carbon of the HP of Lake Chapala has a mean &#948; 13CPDB of -21.4&#8240; which is a typical value for lacustrine organic matter. The occurrence of hydrothermal petroleum in continental rift systems is now well understood and should be included as a target in exploration for future energy resources in such regions.]]></p></abstract>
