Este estudio se realizó con el propósito de establecer una línea base de las concentraciones de estos contaminantes y analizar la posible influencia de fuentes locales de emisión (naturales y antrópicas). Las mediciones se realizaron en 12 puntos de monitoreo distribuidos entre las áreas urbana y rural de la ciudad, considerando la dirección del viento sobre la que se dispersa la pluma del volcán activo Nevado del Ruiz. Se realizaron tres campañas de monitoreo con una duración de cuatro semanas cada una. Las concentraciones promedio de SO2 variaron de 4.1 a 9.8 µg/m3 en los diferentes puntos, con puntos de mayor concentración que sugieren influencia de la actividad industrial y del Nevado del Ruiz. Las concentraciones promedio de NOX variaron en un rango de 5.9 a 82.2 µg/m3, con mayores concentraciones en los puntos con influencia de alto flujo vehicular. Las concentraciones de O3 variaron de 16.1 a 68.1 µg/m3, y las mayores concentraciones se registraron en los puntos del área rural.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Spatial profiles of ambient concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX) and tropospheric ozone (O3) were determined by passive samplers in the Andean city of Manizales, Colombia. The study was performed in order to establish baseline concentrations of these contaminants in ambient air, and to analyze the influence of natural and anthropogenic local emission sources. Measurements were performed in 12 points located between urban and rural areas in the city, considering the wind direction on which the emission of the active volcano Nevado del Ruiz is dispersed. Three monitoring campaigns were carried out with duration of four weeks per campaign. Average SO2 concentrations ranged from 4.1 to 9.8 µg/m3 among the different monitoring points, suggesting the influence of industrial activity and the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. Average concentrations of NOX ranged from 5.9 to 82.2 µg/m3, with higher concentrations in points influenced by high vehicular traffic. O3 concentrations ranged from 16.1 to 68.1 µg/m3, with highest concentrations in the rural area.]]></p></abstract>
