El selenio ejerce efectos en el crecimiento de las plantas, en la calidad organoléptica y en los compuestos nutraceúticos de los cultivos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la respuesta al Se en el cultivo de berenjena (Solanum melongena L.) sobre las variables de crecimiento, rendimiento y calidad nutracéutica de los frutos. Se cultivaron plantas de berenjena con cinco dosis de Se: 0, 10, 30, 60 y 90 µM en un diseño completamente al azar con 11 repeticiones. Los resultados a la cosecha mostraron que las dosis de Se no tuvieron efecto en el peso seco de las plantas, acidez titulable, fenoles y flavonoides en frutos. Las dosis de 30, 60 y 90 µM provocaron disminución del área foliar en 27 %; en frutos, la dosis de 60 µM disminuyó el rendimiento y peso fresco en 36 %, mientras que la dosis de 10 µM disminuyó en 62 % las antocianinas y aumentó en 19 % la vitamina C y en 12 % la actividad antioxidante, y la de 30 µM mostró un contenido de sólidos solubles totales 22 % menor. La aplicación de dosis altas de Se en el cultivo de berenjena afectó negativamente el crecimiento y el rendimiento de las plantas; en cambio, las dosis bajas fueron benéficas en la calidad nutracéutica de los frutos, demostrado con el aumento de la actividad antioxidante y vitamina C.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary Selenium (Se) is considered a beneficial element in plants, as an antioxidant, it helps to improve tolerance to various types of abiotic factors. Selenium has effects on plant growth, organoleptic quality and nutraceutical compounds of crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response to Se in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) on growth traits, yield and nutraceutical quality of fruits. Eggplant plants were grown with five doses of Se: 0, 10, 30, 60 and 90 µM in a completely randomized design with 11 replications. Results at harvest showed that the doses of Se had no effect on plant dry weight, titratable acidity, phenols and flavonoids in fruits. The doses of 30, 60 and 90 µM caused a decrease in leaf area by 27 %; in fruits, the dose of 60 µM decreased yield and fresh weight by 36 %, while the dose of 10 µM decreased anthocyanins by 62 % and increased vitamin C by 19 % and antioxidant activity by 12 %, and the dose of 30 µM showed a content of total soluble solids 22 % lower. The application of high doses of Se in eggplant negatively affected plant growth and yield; on the other hand, low doses were beneficial in the nutraceutical quality of eggplant fruits, demonstrated by the increase in antioxidant activity and vitamin C.]]></p></abstract>
