Una estrategia para recuperar estas tierras es la siembra de especies forrajeras anuales o perennes nativas tolerantes a temperaturas altas, elevados niveles de insolación, déficit hídrico, y capaces de crecer en suelos pobres o salinos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue explorar el efecto de factores abióticos sobre el desempeño germinativo de tres especies abundantes de pastos de zonas áridas: Leptochloa crinita, Pappophorum caespitosum y Digitaria californica.  Métodos:  El porcentaje de germinación (G) y el tiempo medio de germinación (TMG) se evaluaron en condiciones de luz y oscuridad, en presencia y ausencia de espiguillas, y a cinco temperaturas constantes (15, 20, 25, 30 y 35 °C). En una cámara de germinación fueron sembradas 25 espiguillas o cariopses desnudos en cajas de Petri estériles con papel de germinación neutro, se regaron con agua destilada y se dispusieron al azar. El conteo de la germinación (radícula visible) se realizó cada 24 h, durante 5 días.  Resultados clave:  La luz tuvo un efecto positivo en la germinación de L. crinita y P. caespitosum. La germinación de D. californica disminuyó considerablemente a 15 y 35 °C. La espiguilla fue el factor con mayor efecto negativo sobre la germinación de las tres especies. La triple interacción de los factores indicó que las tres especies poseen mejor desempeño germinativo en presencia de luz, con temperaturas entre 20 y 25 °C, y en ausencia de la espiguilla.  Conclusiones:  Las tres especies podrían ser utilizadas en programas de recuperación de tierras degradadas en zonas áridas, debido principalmente a su plasticidad para germinar a diferentes temperaturas, con incidencia de la luz. Los cariopses desnudos aumentan el porcentaje de germinación y mejoran el TMG.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Background and Aims:  Grasslands are the main vegetation in drylands; however, in many cases they are degraded due to a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors. One strategy to restore these lands is the planting of native annual or perennial forage species that are tolerant to high temperatures, high levels of sunshine, water deficit, and capable of growing in poor or saline soils. The objective of this study was to explore the effect of abiotic factors on the germination performance of three key grass species from arid zones: Leptochloa crinita, Pappophorum caespitosum and Digitaria californica.  Methods: The germination percentage (G) and mean germination time (MGT) were evaluated under light and darkness conditions, in the presence and absence of spikelets, and at five constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C). In a germination chamber, 25 spikelets or naked caryopses were sown in sterile Petri dishes with neutral germination paper, irrigated with distilled water, and arranged randomly. The germination count (visible radicle) was carried out every 24 hours for 5 days.  Key results:  Light had a positive effect on the germination of L. crinita and P. caespitosum. The germination of D. californica decreased considerably at 15 and 35 °C. The spikelet was the factor with the greatest negative effect on the germination of all three species. The triple interaction of the factors indicated that the three species have a better germination performance in light, with temperatures between 20 and 25 °C and in the absence of spikelets.  Conclusions:  The three species could be used in soil restoration programs in degraded arid zones, mainly due to their plasticity to germinate at different temperatures and with light incidence. Naked caryopses increase germination percentage and improve MGT.]]></p></abstract>
