Se ha reportado que estas sustancias tienen efecto negativo sobre el desarrollo vegetal y otros procesos biológicos de los cultivos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de tres factores de diseño y la estacionalidad, sobre la eficiencia de remoción de tres fármacos mediante humedales de tratamiento. Para ello, se construyeron 15 sistemas diseñados en función de un cuadrado latino, utilizando como variables de entrada: tipo de planta (Pl), tiempo de retención hidráulica (TRH) y tipo de medio poroso (MP), y como variables de salida, eficiencias de remoción de naproxeno, ibuprofeno y diclofenaco; para evaluar el efecto de la estacionalidad se agruparon 15 muestreos en 3 periodos y se compararon estadísticamente las eficiencias de remoción. Se obtuvieron porcentajes máximos de remoción de 85.3, 79.0 y 81.8% para naproxeno, ibuprofeno y diclofenaco, respectivamente. Con relación a los factores de diseño, se observó que solo el TRH mostró efecto significativo sobre la remoción de naproxeno; por otro lado, ni el MP ni el Pl mostraron variación significativa. En cuanto al efecto de la estacionalidad, se observó mejor desempeño de los sistemas durante el periodo más cálido. Solo el TRH mostró efecto significativo sobre la eficiencia de remoción, logrando eficiencias superiores al 50%, lo que posiciona a estos sistemas, como alternativas efectivas para la remoción de estos compuestos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: Wastewater use in agriculture represents a global problem because of the presence of many organic micropollutants, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These substances have been reported to harm plant development and other biological processes in crops. Therefore, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the effect of three design factors and seasonality on removal efficiency of three drugs by wetlands treatments. Fifteen systems designed according to Latin square were constructed using the following input variables: plant type (Pl), hydraulic retention time (HRT), and type of porous medium (PM), and the output variables were the removal efficiencies of naproxen, ibuprofen, and diclofenac to evaluate the effect of seasonality. Fifteen samples were grouped into three time periods, and the removal efficiencies were statistically compared. The maximum removal percentages of 85.3, 79.0, and 81.8% were obtained for naproxen, ibuprofen, and diclofenac, respectively. Regarding the design factors, only HRT showed a significant effect on naproxen removal; however, neither MP nor Pl showed statistically significant variation. In the case of seasonality, better system performance was observed during the warmer period. Only HRT had a significant effect on removal efficiency, achieving efficiencies higher than 50%, which positions these systems as effective alternatives for removing these compounds.]]></p></abstract>
