<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0187-57792025000100113&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S0187-57792025000100113&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S0187-57792025000100113&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen: Los impulsores del cambio de uso del suelo a diversas escalas ponen en riesgo la estabilidad de los ecosistemas tropicales, que afecta tanto a la biodiversidad como a los servicios ecosistémicos esenciales. Estos cambios son particularmente críticos en áreas como la Cuenca Baja del Río Usumacinta (CBRU), una región de valor ecológico y cultural. En este contexto, el presente estudio tiene como objetivo clasificar las coberturas y usos del suelo (CUS) de la CBRU utilizando imágenes satelitales Landsat 8 OLI. Se emplearon dos métodos de clasificación: el algoritmo ISODATA para clasificación no supervisada (CNS) y el algoritmo de Máxima Verosimilitud (MLC) para clasificación supervisada (CS). La clasificación no supervisada agrupó los píxeles basándose en la distancia espectral, identificando cuatro clases generales: humedales, actividades antropogénicas, vegetación arbórea y cuerpos de agua, con una precisión moderada del 67% y un índice kappa de 0.51. Por su parte, la clasificación supervisada, utilizando 948 puntos de entrenamiento y datos auxiliares derivados del Índice de Vegetación de Diferencia Normalizada (NDVI) y el Modelo Digital de Elevación (DEM), proporcionó un mapeo más detallado, discriminando clases específicas como agricultura (41.46%), humedales (21.17%), plantaciones forestales comerciales (4.09%) y áreas urbanas (0.56%), logrando un índice kappa de 0.90, validado mediante 330 puntos de control terrestre. Los resultados muestran que la integración de los datos NDVI y DEM mejoró significativamente la discriminación espectral de la cobertura forestal tropical y los humedales, mientras que la clasificación no supervisada mostró limitaciones para diferenciar clases específicas como los bosques tropicales, bosques inundados y plantaciones de palma de aceite. Los resultados destacan la importancia de utilizar imágenes satelitales actualizadas, junto con datos auxiliares y algoritmos robustos para lograr una clasificación más precisa de las CUS, fundamental para la planificación territorial, el manejo de recursos naturales y la conservación de la biodiversidad en la CBRU.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: The drivers of land use change at various scales pose a threat to the stability of tropical ecosystems, affecting both biodiversity and essential ecosystem services. These changes are particularly critical in areas such as the Lower Usumacinta River Basin (LURB), a region of ecological and cultural value. In this context, our study aims to classify land cover and land use (LCLU) in the LURB using Landsat 8 OLI satellite imagery. Two classification methods were employed: the ISODATA algorithm for unsupervised classification (USC) and the Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) algorithm for supervised classification (SC). The unsupervised classification grouped the pixels based on spectral distance, identifying four general classes: wetlands, anthropogenic activities, tree vegetation, and water bodies, with a moderate accuracy of 67% and a kappa index of 0.51. In contrast, the supervised classification, using 948 training points and auxiliary data derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), provided more detailed mapping, discriminating specific classes such as agriculture (41.46%), wetlands (21.17%), commercial forest plantations (4.09%), and urban areas (0.56%), achieving a kappa index of 0.90, validated with 330 ground control points. Our results show that the integration of NDVI and DEM data significantly improved spectral discrimination of tropical forest cover and wetlands, while the unsupervised classification exhibited limitations in differentiating specific classes such as tropical forests, flooded forests, and oil palm plantations. Our findings highlight the importance of using up-to-date satellite imagery, along with auxiliary data and robust algorithms, to achieve more accurate LCLU classification, which is essential for land planning, natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation in the LURB.]]></p></abstract>
