Los procesos de atención permiten mantener enfocada la mente en uno o varios estímulos para ser procesados posteriormente. Los prematuros tienen mayor riesgo de presentar trastornos cognitivos. El objetivo del este estudio fue comparar el desarrollo de la atención visual y auditiva en lactantes que nacieron a término en comparación a quienes nacieron prematuros.  Material y métodos:  participaron 60 lactantes, 40 con antecedente de ser prematuros; al momento de la evaluación tenían cuatro y ocho meses de edad. La atención visual y auditiva se evalúo mediante la escala de evaluación de la atención selectiva.  Resultados:  los lactantes de ocho meses obtuvieron calificaciones más altas en cuanto a atención visual y auditiva que los lactantes de cuatro meses. Los lactantes a término a la edad de cuatro meses tuvieron mejores calificaciones en la atención auditiva que las de los lactantes prematuros. Mientras que a los ocho meses edad, los lactantes prematuros presentaron calificaciones más altas en la atención visual.  Conclusiones:  se recomienda la evaluación y tratamiento temprano de los procesos de atención en lactantes con prematuridad, lo cual puede evitar secuelas cognitivas a largo plazo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Introduction:  preterm birth has been related to sensory, motor and cognitive difficulties. Attention processes allow us to keep the mind focused on one or more stimuli to be processed later. Premature infants have a higher risk of presenting cognitive disorders. The objective of this study was to compare the development of visual and auditory attention in infants who were born at-term compared to those born prematurely.  Material and methods:  60 infants participated, 40 with a history of being premature; At the time of evaluation, they were four and eight months old. Visual and auditory attention was evaluated using the selective attention evaluation scale.  Results:  eight-month-old infants scored higher on visual and auditory attention than four-month-old infants. At-term infants at age 4 months had better auditory attention scores than preterm infants. While at eight months of age, premature infants presented higher scores in visual attention.  Conclusions:  early evaluation and treatment of attention processes in prematurity infants is recommended, which can avoid long-term cognitive sequelae.]]></p></abstract>
