Sin embargo, sus variantes antes consideradas solo hallazgos imagenológicos, se han relacionado con enfermedades de la aorta torácica.  Objetivo: Identificar variantes anatómicas del arco aórtico asociadas al desarrollo y progresión de enfermedad aórtica torácica.  Métodos: Estudio observacional, analítico, transversal y retrospectivo. Se revisaron angiotomografías torácicas de 2012 a 2017 para su análisis comparativo.  Resultados: Un total de 769 pacientes evaluados. La variante más común fue el tronco bovino (23.67%). En pacientes con enfermedad aórtica torácica, esta variante estuvo presente en el 45.6 vs. 24.1% en la población general, con un riesgo relativo de 4.3. Estos pacientes presentaron una tasa de crecimiento aórtico anual de 3.5 mm, comparado con 1.23 mm en quienes no tenían variantes.  Conclusión: El tronco bovino es la variante anatómica más frecuente y representa un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo y progresión de enfermedad de aorta torácica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: The aortic arch normally gives rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery. However, its variants, previously considered solely imaging findings, have been linked to thoracic aortic disease.  Objective: To identify anatomical variants of the aortic arch associated with the development and progression of thoracic aortic disease.  Methods: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional, and retrospective study. Thoracic CT angiograms from 2012 to 2017 were reviewed for comparative analysis.  Results: A total of 769 patients were evaluated. The most common variant was the bovine trunk (23.67%). In patients with thoracic aortic disease, this variant was present in 45.6 vs. 24.1% in the general population, with a relative risk of 4.3. These patients had an annual aortic growth rate of 3.5 mm, compared with 1.23 mm in those without variants.  Conclusion: The bovine trunk is the most common anatomical variant and represents a risk factor for the development and progression of thoracic aortic disease.]]></p></abstract>
