</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract The morbidity and mortality in patients who are affected by oncological pathology, occurs to a greater extent secondary to metastasis, than when compared with the primary tumor. The central role of the immune system is to protect against the proliferation of cancer cells, which implies that any factor that influences the antitumor activity of the immune system, has a big impact on the course of the disease. Although opioids have traditionally been used for the management of perioperative pain, several in vitro studies have been conducted in animals and some other in voluntary patients, which have shown valuable information on the effect of immunoregulation by their use, being thus important to understand their potential clinical effect in this context. So the main reason why we propose to review the literature is because of the emerging interest in the possible association of perioperative use of opioids, recurrence and metastasis, after oncological surgery.
</abstract>
