A pesar de ello, en comparación con otros temas relacionados con las plataformas online (en línea), su estudio académico aún dista de estar consolidado. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este artículo es contribuir al entendimiento de este tipo de contenidos y sus implicaciones para la comunicación política. Para lograrlo, se realizó una investigación sobre su recepción, usos y significados en el contexto de las elecciones presidenciales del 2018 en México. Dado el carácter exploratorio de este trabajo, se recurrió a una metodología cualitativa basada en grupos focales. Los resultados principales apuntan a que los memes manifiestan efectos prodemocráticos y antidemocráticos. Los primeros se asocian con estimular el consumo de información seria, activar conversaciones sobre los temas políticos o apuntalar la crítica al poder; mientras que los segundos profundizan sentimientos de ineficacia política, cinismo, y una lectura frívola de los problemas políticos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Memes are one of the hallmarks of online communication through social media. However, the study of this kind of content is yet to be consolidated. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to foster the understanding of memes and their implications for political communication. In so doing, we conducted a study on the reception, uses and meanings of memes during the 2018 Mexican presidential elections. Due to its exploratory scope, this research draws on a qualitative methodology based upon focus groups. The main findings indicate that these messages simultaneously show pro and antidemocratic effects. That is, they boost the consumption of quality information, start conversations about political issues, and promote criticism of politicians and authorities. Nevertheless, they also foster cynicism and a sense of political inefficacy, as well as a superficial understanding of political affairs.]]></p></abstract>
