Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes of some morphological and physiological attributes in plants of two representative species of the TT (Prosopis laevigata Humb. et Bonpl. ex Willd and Cordia boissieri A. DC.) grown under different light environments under nursery conditions.  Materials and methods: Growth, biomass production and chlorophyll concentration were evaluated as responses to three environments: 1) outdoors (OD), 2) 40 % shade (N40) and 3) 60 % shade (N60). Plants were grown in a traditional polyethylene bag system for 17 weeks.  Results and discussion: Based on diameter growth and biomass production, both species grew better in the outdoor light conditions. The effect of limited light availability was also observed in leaf area and chlorophyll a and b concentrations; these variables increased significantly (P &lt; 0.05) for C. boissieri as shading increased, in contrast to P. laevigata.  Conclusion: Although the growth of both species is higher in high light levels, C. boissieri shows acclimation strategies suggesting an intermediate tolerance to shade, compared to P. laevigata, which confirms to be light demanding. This information is important for the management of the species according to light conditions in reforestation programs.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  La ecofisiología y las respuestas de las plantas a factores ambientales, como la aclimatación ante ambientes lumínicos heterogéneos, son importantes en ecosistemas que enfrentan procesos de degradación y fragmentación como el Matorral Espinoso Tamaulipeco (MET).  Objetivo: Evaluar los cambios de algunos atributos morfológicos y fisiológicos en plantas de dos especies representativas del MET (Prosopis laevigata Humb. et Bonpl. ex Willd y Cordia boissieri A. DC.) cultivadas bajo ambientes lumínicos distintos en vivero.  Materiales y métodos: Se evaluó el crecimiento, producción de biomasa y concentración de clorofilas como respuestas a tres ambientes: 1) cielo abierto (CA), 2) malla sombra al 40 % (M40) y 3) malla sombra al 60 % (M60). Las plantas se cultivaron en sistema tradicional de bolsa de polietileno durante 17 semanas.  Resultados y discusión: Con base en el crecimiento en diámetro y producción de biomasa, ambas especies se desempeñaron mejor en cielo abierto. El efecto de la disponibilidad limitada de luz también se observó en el área foliar y las concentraciones de clorofilas a y b; en el caso de C. boissieri, estas variables incrementaron significativamente (P &lt; 0.05) a mayor sombreo, a diferencia de lo sucedido en P. laevigata.  Conclusión: Aunque el crecimiento de ambas especies es mayor en niveles altos de luz, C. boissieri muestra estrategias de aclimatación que sugiere una tolerancia intermedia a la sombra, a diferencia de P. laevigata que confirma ser demandante de luz. Esta información es de importancia para el manejo de las especies en función de las condiciones lumínicas en programas de reforestación.]]></p></abstract>
