Ecuador se ha anticipado en implementar la gratuidad en la educación superior pública, mientras Chile evidencia algunos avances más recientes en este plano. Los desafíos pendientes que enfrentan ambos sistemas se centran en consensuar una visión de largo plazo, obtener el financiamiento que soporte las reformas necesarias y mejorar la equidad en el acceso. A pesar de los esfuerzos desplegados a la fecha, la cobertura es insuficiente en la población de ingresos más bajos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo: Este artigo analisa comparativamente os processos reformistas impulsados pelos governos do Chile e Equador em matéria de acesso e financiamento da educação superior. Equador se antecipou em implementar a educação superior pública gratuita, enquanto Chile evidencia alguns avanços mais recentes neste plano. Os desafios pendentes que enfrentam ambos sistemas se centram em estabelecer uma visão a largo prazo, obter o financiamento que suporte as reformas necessárias e melhorar a equidade no acesso. Apesar dos esforços realizados até agora, a cobertura é insuficiente na população de baixa renda.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: This article analyzes by means of a comparison the reform processes promoted by the governments of Chile and Ecuador in the area of access to and funding of higher education. Ecuador has anticipated the implementation of free education in public higher education, while Chile evidences some more recent advances in this area. The pending challenges faced by both systems are centered on agreeing on a long-term vision, obtaining financing to support the necessary reforms, and improving equity of access. Despite the efforts made so far, coverage is insufficient in the lowest income population.]]></p></abstract>
