These islands are surrounded by channels and sills, which in interaction with tides propitiate the conditions for strong water column mixing, and together with the topography and stratification produce internal waves (IW). The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has demonstrated its capacity to detect IW at important oceanic areas. In this study, the seasonal and inter-annual variability of IW was determined for the first time using &#8220;quick-look&#8221; SAR images (SI) at NGC during the period of 2000-2006.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Las islas Ángel de la Guarda y Tiburón se localizan hacia el norte del Golfo de California (NGC), y se les conoce por lo común como las grandes islas. Tales islas están rodeadas de canales y umbrales, que al interactuar con las mareas propician las condiciones para una fuerte mezcla en la columna de agua, y junto con la topografía y estatificación producen ondas internas (IW). El radar de apertura sintética (SAR) ha demostrado su capacidad para detectar IW en zonas oceánicas importantes. En el presente estudio, la variabilidad estacional e interanual de IW fue determinada por primera vez con imágenes SAR (SI) de vista rápida en el NGC durante el periodo2000-2006.]]></p></abstract>
