El objetivo del estudio fue identificar una posible asociación entre la apendicectomía previa y la gravedad de la infección por C. difficile, lo cual ha sido reportado de manera variable en la literatura. Utilizando un diseño de casos y controles, se examinaron datos retrospectivos de pacientes diagnosticados con C. difficile en un lapso de tres años. A pesar de la prevalencia de 24% de apendicectomía previa, el análisis no reveló diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la gravedad de la infección entre pacientes con y sin esta cirugía. La mortalidad fue de 12%, destacando la importancia del manejo eficaz de estas infecciones. Los resultados sugieren que la apendicectomía no está asociada de manera clara con la gravedad de la infección, mientras que factores como el diagnóstico oncológico y la hospitalización previa podrían tener una mayor relevancia. En el contexto de la epidemiología del C. difficile, el estudio resalta la importancia de estrategias preventivas efectivas y la mejora continua en el manejo clínico de esta infección.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The incidence and risk factors of Clostridioides difficile infections have changed in recent decades; in Mexico, there are only a few studies on this. This study aimed to identify a possible association between previous appendectomy and the severity of C. difficile infection, which has been reported with diverse results in other investigations. We use a case-control design, with retrospective data from patients diagnosed with C. difficile over three years examined. Despite the 24% prevalence of previous appendectomy, the analysis did not reveal statistically significant differences in the severity of the infection between patients with and without this surgery. Mortality was 12%; this highlights the importance of effectively managing C. difficile infections. The results suggest that appendectomy is not associated with the severity of the infection, but factors such as oncological diagnosis and previous hospitalization could have greater relevance. In the epidemiological context of C. difficile, this study highlights the importance of effective preventive strategies and continuous improvement in the clinical management of this infection.]]></p></abstract>
