</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract: This article aims to identify the power relationship established between politicians and journalists in press conferences on the bilateral relationship between the United States and Mexico in 2017-2021. Press conferences given by US and Mexican government were analyzed. Behavior models used to analyze the power relationship between journalists and politicians, theories about the roles of journalists and politicians in press conferences, and theories about types of questions and answers. Throughout the text, press conferences available on the websites of the US Department of State and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs are taken as a sample. Content analysis is used to identify actors, topics, types of question and answer, and discourse analysis is used to present and comment on the questions and answers. The predominant topics are migration, the evolution of the bilateral relationship, security and the renegotiation of NAFTA. More “inquisitive” than “procedural” questions are asked. Political representatives respond by emphasizing points of common interest and “nuancing” Trump’s statements. The predominant power relationship model is the “exchange model”. The analysis allows for the determination of the level of transparency offered by government institutions. It is also possible to discern which model of power relationship predominates in the exchanges between politicians and journalists.
</abstract>
