</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract. In this article, I reflect on how political circumstances affect research work, especially in the negotiation of access and permanence in the field, focusing on the study of the armed forces in Brazil and Mexico. In the context of an ethnographic immersion, negotiating entry into the field involves considerations of age, gender, and political neutrality, especially when interacting with “institutional gatekeepers.” I also describe the challenges of maintaining access to the field as political-military dynamics evolve, and analyze them by questioning my role as a researcher in politicized contexts. Finally, I discuss how researching military elites becomes challenging when the topic is repulsive to the researcher. Thus, my experiences and reflections highlight the evolution of my research methods and topics in the face of militarization, inviting broad discussions on how to address ethical and practical dilemmas in qualitative research involving subjects who cause repulsion and researchers who may be “troublesome” in the field.
</abstract>
