Authors of this article participated as professionals and researchers in a ten-year research/action binational project named The Georgia Project (1997-2007). This project was born as an agreement of collaboration between universities in Monterrey and school districts in the state of Georgia. The focus of the analysis is to examine the role played by the schools, principals, teachers in the process of integrating (or not integrating) immigrants and their families in a region impacted by a sudden immigration from Mexico. As a result of the arrival of Mexican workers, the school enrollment was dramatically transformed. Thus, the paper focuses on the political role of the schools, and shows the ambivalent position educators and administrators have about newcomers.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen. El artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación/acción en la que los autores participaron a lo largo de diez años (1997-2007). En el marco de un proyecto de colaboración entre instituciones de educación superior de Monterrey y distritos escolares del estado de Georgia, los autores ayudaron a desarrollar proyectos de apoyo a las escuelas de la región debido a que la matrícula escolar se había transformado radicalmente por la inmigración de familias de origen mexicano. Ante esta súbita revolución demográfica, los autores analizan la forma como las escuelas responden para colaborar o entorpecer la integración de los inmigrantes.]]></p></abstract>
