Sin embargo, la inflamación es la principal causa de su cronicidad y la destrucción de los tejidos periodontales, principalmente del hueso alveolar que conduce al edentulismo. Los mecanismos que llevan a la destrucción de los tejidos incluyen el incremento no regulado de mediadores inflamatorios y alteraciones en los mecanismos de resolución de la inflamación. El carácter silencioso e indoloro de la patología ocasiona que el padecimiento sea ignorado permitiendo su evolución a cuadros crónicos y severos, por lo que su incidencia es alta. La presente revisión describe los mecanismos moleculares y celulares de la inflamación durante el progreso de la EP, así como su participación en la destrucción de los tejidos de soporte. El conocimiento de la patogénesis de la EP con base en la inflamación crónica podría brindar opciones terapéuticas novedosas para la reducción de la EP y sus repercusiones.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Periodontal disease (PD) is an alteration caused by bacteria, but inflammation is the main cause of chronicity and periodontal tissue destruction, mainly of alveolar bone, which may lead to edentulism. The mechanisms responsible for this destruction include non-regulated increase of inflammatory mediators and alterations in inflammation resolution pathways. Given the silent and painless character of this pathology, it is usually ignored, so it worsens and may reach severe stages. Hence, PD has a high prevalence. The present review describes the molecular and cellular mechanisms of inflammation in PD progress and the principal immune cells and molecules involved in periodontal destruction. A thorough knowledge of PD pathogenesis based on chronic inflammation could provide novel therapeutic alternatives to reduce PD and treatment shortcomings.]]></p></abstract>
