Ten yeasts were isolated and identified by sequencing the ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) regions. Three basidiomycete yeasts and seven ascomycete yeasts were identified. All of the strains assimilated glucose and xylose, but none could assimilate starch. Three strains showed fermentative metabolism and five cellulolytic and xylanolytic activity in plaque. It was observed that the concentration and type of N influenced the hydrolytic activity in the growth medium. Only one strain was able to show laccase activity (Cryptococcus sp.) in a medium supplemented with glycerol. Based on the results obtained, the isolated yeasts have the potential to be used in hydrolysis processes of lignocellulolytic residues as well as in fermentative processes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Este estudio tuvo como objetivo aislar cepas de levaduras de la microbiota asociada a la degradación de la lignocelulosa de Eucryphia cordifolia, conocida como &#8220;Palo podrido&#8221; con capacidad celulolítica, xilanolítica y lacasa. Se aislaron e identificaron diez levaduras secuenciando las regiones ITS (Espaciador transcrito interno). Se identificaron tres levaduras de basidiomicetos y siete de ascomicetos. Todas las cepas asimilaron glucosa y xilosa, ninguna fue capaz de asimilar almidón. Tres cepas mostraron metabolismo fermentativo y cinco actividad celulolítica y xilanolítica en placa. Se observó que la actividad hidrolítica estuvo influenciada por la concentración y tipo de nitrógeno en el medio de crecimiento. Sólo una cepa fue capaz de mostrar actividad lacasa (Cryptococcus sp.) en medio suplementado con glicerol. En base a los resultados obtenidos, las levaduras aisladas tienen potencial para ser utilizadas en procesos de hidrólisis de residuos lignocelulolíticos así como en procesos fermentativos.]]></p></abstract>
