The new Harper-type melon hybrids have higher fruit quality, longer post-harvest life and higher yields than commercial ones. The objective of this work was to identify new Harper-type melon hybrids with longer post-harvest life to reach distant markets. Three Harper-type melon hybrids (King RZ, Queen RZ, Alaniz Gold) were evaluated against a control of the region (Cruiser F1). The experiment was carried out in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico, under a randomized block design. The post-harvest life of the fruits stored at 18 °C was evaluated at 10, 20 and 30 days, from the weight loss percentage and the speed factor thereof. There was no significant difference in fruit weight and yield. Queen RZ and King RZ hybrids had the highest total soluble solids values at the time of harvest (13.62 and 13.42 °Brix, respectively) and 30 days post-harvest (10.25 and 10.44 °Brix, respectively) (P &#8804; 0.05). Both were marketable after 30 days of storage, sufficient to reach distant markets.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En la Comarca Lagunera, el melón es considerado el cultivo vegetal más importante, por lo que existe interés en abrir nuevos mercados de exportación para los que se han investigado diversas formas de conservación de la fruta. Los nuevos híbridos de melón tipo Harper tienen una mayor calidad de fruta, mayor vida poscosecha y mayores rendimientos en comparación con los híbridos comerciales. El objetivo de este trabajo fue identificar nuevos híbridos de melón tipo Harper con una vida poscosecha mayor para llegar a mercados lejanos. Se evaluaron tres híbridos de melón tipo Harper (King RZ, Queen RZ, Alaniz Gold) contra un control de la región (Cruiser F1). El experimento se llevó a cabo en Matamoros, Coahuila, México, bajo un diseño de bloques aleatorios. La vida poscosecha de los frutos almacenados a 18 °C se evaluó a los 10, 20 y 30 días a partir del porcentaje de pérdida de peso y su factor de velocidad. No se observaron diferencias significativas en el peso de la fruta y el rendimiento. Los híbridos Queen RZ y King RZ presentaron los mayores valores de sólidos solubles totales al momento de la cosecha (13.62 y 13.42 °Brix, respectivamente) y a los 30 días después de la cosecha (10.25 y 10.44 °Brix, respectivamente) (P &#8804; 0.05).
