MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio de casos y controles al que se incluyeron mujeres con obesidad exógena (IMC mayor de 30 kg/m2) posoperadas de cesárea electiva en la Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad Hospital de Ginecoobstetricia 4. El grupo de casos lo integraron pacientes con infección de la herida quirúrgica y el grupo control pacientes sin complicaciones. La diferencia de proporciones entre los grupos se determinó mediante la prueba de la &#967;2; se consideró significativo el valor de p &lt; 0.05.  RESULTADOS: Se estudiaron 58 pacientes obesas: 26 casos y 32 controles. El tipo de incisión fue similar en uno y otro grupo: incisión transversa 22 (34.6% en comparación con 40.6%, p = 0.63) e incisión media 36 (65.4% comparado con 59.4%, p = 0.63). El microorganismo aislado con mayor frecuencia fue Escherichia coli en 9 (15.5%) pacientes en los cultivos de secreción.  CONCLUSIÓN: El tipo de incisión abdominal en la cesárea electiva en mujeres obesas no se asoció con la ocurrencia de infección ni dehiscencia de la herida. La decisión del acceso quirúrgico depende de las características clínicas de la paciente y de la preferencia del cirujano.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether the type of skin incision (inframammary, midline, or transverse) for elective cesarean section is associated with surgical wound infection in obese patients and to identify the microorganism most commonly isolated in these infections.  MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case-control study was performed in women with exogenous obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m2) who underwent elective caesarean section at the Unidad Médica de Alta Especialidad Hospital de Ginecoobstetricia 4. The case group consisted of patients with surgical wound infection and the control group consisted of patients without complications. The difference in proportions between the groups was determined using the &#967;2 test; a p-value of &lt; 0.05 was considered significant.  RESULTS: 58 obese patients were studied: 26 cases and 32 controls. The type of incision was similar in both groups: transverse incision 22 (34.6% vs. 40.6%, p = 0.63) and midline incision 36 (65.4% vs. 59.4%, p = 0.63). The most common microorganism isolated from secretion cultures was Escherichia coli in 9 (15.5%) patients.  CONCLUSION: The type of abdominal incision in elective cesarean section in obese women was not associated with the occurrence of infection or wound dehiscence. The choice of surgical approach depends on the clinical characteristics of the patient and the preference of the surgeon.]]></p></abstract>
