En la región norponiente del estado de Morelos se identificaron tres sitios con alto riesgo de contaminación del agua subterránea: el relleno sanitario Loma de Mejía, el basurero de Tetlama (actualmente clausurado) y la zona concesionada a una empresa minera (Cerro El Jumil). Para evaluar la vulnerabilidad a la contaminación del agua subterránea, se construyó un mapa de vulnerabilidad DRASTFU, el cual utiliza cinco variables del método tradicional DRASTIC más la ubicación de los sitios con peligro de contaminación y la dirección predominante del sistema de flujos del agua subterránea. Se identificaron áreas de vulnerabilidad extrema al sureste del basurero de Tetlama y de vulnerabilidad media y alta en regiones cercanas al relleno sanitario Loma de Mejía. Se aplicó una encuesta para evaluar las condiciones sociales y de salud de pobladores de la zona de estudio, encontrándose diferencias en las prevalencias de algunas afectaciones a la salud relacionadas con el uso y consumo de agua contaminada o no potable, lo cual resalta las diferencias en problemas gastrointestinales entre Loma de Mejía y Cerro El Jumil. Asimismo, se identificó la presencia de arsénico en concentraciones superiores al límite permisible (0.01 mg/L, estipulado en la Norma Oficial Mexicana de calidad de agua para uso y consumo humano) en el agua de cinco pozos de la zona de estudio. Se recomienda un abordaje preventivo para reducir la afectación a la salud pública y ambiental, y aplicar un adecuado ordenamiento ecológico territorial.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT In Mexico, the main source of drinking water is groundwater, which is essential for the proper biological and socioeconomic development of people. In the northwestern region of the state of Morelos, three sites with a high risk of groundwater contamination were identified: the Loma de Mejía landfill, the Tetlama dump (which is currently closed), and the area licensed to a mining company (Cerro El Jumil). To assess the vulnerability to groundwater contamination in this area, a DRASTFU vulnerability map was constructed, which uses five variables from the traditional DRASTIC method, plus the location of sites at risk of contamination and the predominant direction of the groundwater flow system. Areas of extreme contamination vulnerability were identified southeast of the Tetlama dump, and areas of medium and high vulnerability for regions near the Loma de Mejía landfill. A survey was applied to evaluate the social and health conditions of residents in the study area, revealing differences in the prevalence of various health problems related to the use and consumption of contaminated or non-potable water. This highlighted differences in gastrointestinal problems between Loma de Mejía and Cerro El Jumil. Likewise, the presence of arsenic was identified in concentrations above the permissible limit (0.01 mg/L, stipulated in the Mexican Official Standard for water quality for human use and consumption) in the water of five wells in the study area. This study on groundwater contamination vulnerability suggests a prevention-focused approach to reduce the impact on public and environmental health, as well as to implement appropriate ecological land-use planning.]]></p></abstract>
