Entre los contaminantes que afectan a la salud se encuentran las partículas suspendidas. La ciudad de La Paz, Baja California Sur, México, se sitúa en un ambiente árido, tiene una tasa de vehículos per cápita muy elevada, un alto porcentaje de calles sin pavimentar y dos centrales eléctricas que queman combustóleo. El presente estudio analizó la composición de partículas suspendidas en el aire de La Paz. Durante un año se recolectaron partículas en cuatro sitios, utilizando filtros de teflón de 2 µm de tamaño de poro y un sistema de succión de aire. Se analizaron 96 muestras mediante la técnica de Espectrometría de Masas de Plasma para 21 elementos. Se normalizaron los valores de las concentraciones y se aplicó un análisis de factores para identificar posibles fuentes de emisión. Los elementos As, Be, Ce, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn y Ti se relacionan con la litología local; el Cd, el Cu, el Pb y el Sn se asocian con emisiones naturales, pinturas y vehículos motorizados, y el V y el Ni son emitidos por las centrales eléctricas. Se calculó el factor de enriquecimiento e identificó que el Ni y el V obtuvieron la categoría de &#8220;extremadamente enriquecidos&#8221; en el sitio de muestreo ubicado en el centro de la ciudad. Se encontró que las concentraciones de los elementos se incrementan en invierno probablemente por las inversiones térmicas causadas por temperaturas bajas en combinación con los vientos invernales del NO y NE, más la orografía.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The World Health Organization indicates that air pollution is responsible for 6.7 million premature deaths annually worldwide. Among the pollutants that affect people&#8217;s health are suspended particles. La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico, is in an arid environment, has a very high motor vehicle rate per capita, a high percentage of unpaved streets, and two fuel oil-burning power plants. The present investigation examined the composition of particles suspended in the air in La Paz. For this purpose, suspended particles were collected during one year at four sampling sites using 2 µm pore size Teflon filters and an air suction system. The 96 samples collected were analyzed by the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry technique for 21 elements. The concentration values were normalized, and a factor analysis was applied to identify possible emission sources. As, Be, Ce, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, and Ti are related to local lithology; Cd, Cu, Pb, and Sn are associated with natural emissions, paints, and motor vehicle emissions, and V and Ni are emitted by the power plants. The enrichment factor was calculated, and Ni and V obtained the category of &#8220;extremely enriched&#8221; at the sampling site located in the city center. Seasonally, it was found that the concentrations of the elements increase during winter, probably due to thermal inversions caused by low temperatures in combination with winter winds from the NW and NE, plus the orography.]]></p></abstract>
