Sin embargo, la información acerca de las asociaciones ecológicas entre especies y su relación con factores ambientales es deficiente. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: 1) analizar la similitud ecológica en la distribución de especies, y 2) identificar los factores ambientales que más influyen en la distribución espacial de las especies; ambos a nivel paisaje en las principales regiones montañosas de México.  Métodos:  Se recopiló una base de datos con los registros de la presencia de especies del género Pinus que se distribuyen en las principales regiones montañosas de México. Cada región se dividió en cuadrículas espaciales de ~10 × 10 km. A partir de estas se construyeron matrices ambientales y de especies. Con base en las matrices, se desarrollaron Análisis de Correspondencia Canónica (ACC) para identificar asociaciones de especies y su relación con los gradientes ambientales.  Resultados clave: En promedio, el porcentaje de inercia explicada por los ACC fue de 30.3%. La distribución geográfica de los pinos en la Sierra Madre Occidental y en la Sierra Madre del Sur fue principalmente explicada por la presión de vapor de agua; en la Sierra Madre Oriental por la precipitación del mes más lluvioso; en la Faja Volcánica Transmexicana por la temperatura media del cuarto más seco; en las Sierras de Chiapas por la altitud y en las zonas boscosas de Baja California por la estacionalidad de la precipitación.  Conclusiones:  El análisis de correlación canónica realizado permitió identificar cuatro grupos de especies del género Pinus con preferencias ecológicas similares en cada sistema montañoso de México. Los factores ambientales mayormente incidentes sobre la distribución de los pinos en México son: altitud, presión de vapor de agua, radiación solar, velocidad del viento y el porcentaje de arcilla en el suelo; la importancia de tales factores varía a nivel regional.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Background and Aims: Mexico is an important center of species richness for the genus Pinus. However, information regarding the ecological associations among species and their relationship with environmental factors is deficient. The objectives of this study were: 1) to analyze the ecological similarity in species distribution, and 2) to identify the environmental factors that most influence the spatial distribution of species, both at the landscape level in the main mountain systems of Mexico.  Methods:  A database with records of Pinus species distributed across the major mountainous regions of Mexico was compiled. Each region was divided into approximately 10 × 10 km spatial grids. Next, environmental and species matrices were constructed. Then Canonical Correspondence Analysis (ACC) were performed from the matrices to identify species associations and their relationship with environmental gradients.  Key results: On average, the percentage of inertia explained by the ACC was 30.3%. The geographic distribution of pines in the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Sierra Madre del Sur was primarily explained by water vapor pressure; in the Sierra Madre Oriental, by the precipitation of the wettest month; in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, by the mean temperature of the fourth driest month; in the Chiapas Highlands, by altitude; and in the forested areas of Baja California, by precipitation seasonality.  Conclusions: Canonical correlation analysis identified four groups of Pinus species with similar ecological preferences in each mountain range in Mexico. The environmental factors most impacting the distribution of pines in Mexico are altitude, water vapor pressure, solar radiation, wind speed, and the percentage of clay in the soil; the importance of these factors varies regionally.]]></p></abstract>
