The objectives of this study are to report the presence of this species in Costa Rica, to present an overview of its geographic distribution, and to provide a key to the species of Burmannia in Mesoamerica.  Methods:  We review the distribution of Burmannia tenella based on literature, herbarium specimens and unequivocal photographic records, as well as recent collections from Costa Rica.  Key results:  Burmannia tenella is reported as new for Costa Rica, the first reported occurrence of this species west of the Andes. We review its geographic distribution and provide an updated key to the five known species of Burmannia in Mesoamerica. Apparent inconsistencies with the numbering of some of Richard Spruce&#8217;s herbarium collections (including the type of B. tenella) are briefly discussed.  Conclusions:  Given that all South American records of Burmannia tenella are from localities east of the Andes (the closest of which is 1170 km distant), the occurrence of this species in Central America represents a significant disjunction from its previously known geographical distribution.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen:  Antecedentes y Objetivos:  Burmannia tenella es una especie holo-micoheterótrofa ampliamente distribuida en el Bioma Amazónico. Los objetivos de este estudio son reportar la presencia de esta especie en Costa Rica, presentar una descripción general de su distribución geográfica, y brindar una clave para las especies de Burmannia en Mesoamérica.  Métodos:  Revisamos la distribución de Burmannia tenella con base en la literatura, especímenes de herbario y en registros fotográficos inequívocos, además de colecciones recientes de Costa Rica.  Resultados clave:  Se reporta a Burmannia tenella como nueva para Costa Rica, el primer informe de esta especie al oeste de los Andes. Revisamos su distribución geográfica, y brindamos una clave actualizada para las cinco especies conocidas de Burmannia en Mesoamérica. Se discuten brevemente inconsistencias aparentes con la numeración de algunas colecciones de herbario de Richard Spruce (incluyendo el tipo de B. tenella).  Conclusiones:  Debido a que todos los registros de Burmannia tenella en Suramérica son de lugares al este de los Andes (el más cercano de los cuales está alejado 1170 km), la presencia de esta especie en América Central representa una disyunción significativa de su distribución geográfica previamente conocida.]]></p></abstract>
