Sin embargo, tiene corta vida de anaquel; además, el uso excesivo de fertilizantes químicos provoca la degradación, contaminación y erosión de los suelos y mantos acuíferos. Es por ello que el objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto del uso de dos fertilizantes orgánicos sobre la calidad de lechuga (Lactuca sativa L.) durante su almacenamiento postcosecha a 5 °C. Para ello, se cultivaron lechugas (Lactuca sativa L.) de la variedad romana (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) y se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar con tres tratamientos: fertilizante químico (FQ), lombricomposta con base de pulpa de café (LC), y lombricomposta con base de heces de borrego (LHB), con 10 repeticiones cada uno. Las lechugas cultivadas fueron almacenadas a 5±1 °C y se analizaron después de 0, 5 y 10 días de almacenamiento, los parámetros de sólidos solubles totales (SST), pH, color, polifenoles y flavonoides totales, actividad antioxidante por el método DPPH y FRAP, y actividad de la enzima polifenol oxidasa (PPO). Los resultados muestran que al final del almacenamiento, las lechugas del LC presentaron los mayores valores de luminosidad y cromaticidad, así como en el contenido de polifenoles totales (0.9 mg EAG g-1), flavonoides totales (0.8 mg CE g-1), actividad antioxidante por el método de DPPH (4.1 uET g-1), y FRAP (6.9 uET g-1), mientras que en la actividad de PPO, las lechugas de LHB, presentaron la menor actividad. Por lo anterior, el uso de fertilizantes orgánicos, como LC, mejora la calidad poscosecha del cultivo de lechuga y mantiene su vida de anaquel hasta por 10 días a 5 ± 1 °C, lo cual podría ayudar a alargar la vida poscosecha del cultivo, disminuyendo el uso de fertilizantes químicos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Summary: One of the most important and widely produced crops in the world is lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), due to its high nutritional value and organoleptic properties. However, the abuse of chemical fertilizers for its production results in soil erosion and aquifers pollution. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effect of organic fertilizers on the post-harvest quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) at 5 °C. A completely randomized experimental design was developed, involving romaine lettuces (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) grown under 3 different treatments: Chemical fertilizer (FQ); coffee pulp vermicompost (LC); and sheep manure vermicompost (LHB), with 10 replicates of each treatment. After harvest, the lettuces were stored at 5±1 °C. Selected quality parameters of total soluble solids (TSS), pH, color, total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, in vitro antioxidant activity, and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity were assessed on days 0, 5 and 10 of storage. The results showed that by the end of storage, LC lettuces had the highest luminosity and chromaticity values, as well as total phenolic compounds (0.9 mg EAG g-1), total flavonoids (0.8 mg CE g-1), DPPH antioxidant activity (4.1 uET g-1) and FRAP antioxidant activity (6.9 uET g-1 &#956;TE g-1). LHB lettuces showed the lowest PPO activity. These results show evidence that the use of organic fertilizers, especially coffee pulp vermicompost, improves the postharvest quality of lettuce and maintains its shelf-life for up to 10 days of storage at 5±1 ºC, which can contribute to prevent spoilage and wastes, as well as to substitute the use of inorganic fertilizers, with their detrimental environmental effects.]]></p></abstract>
