Objetivo: Conocer la frecuencia, evolución y morbimortalidad de la enfermedad.  Material y método: De 71 pacientes la muestra se dividió en dos grupos: grupo A, 44 (61.97%) pacientes sobrevivientes, y grupo B, 27 (38%) fallecidos. Se calcularon porcentajes, medias y desviaciones estándar, además de t de Student, chi cuadrada y OR IC95%.  Resultados: Hubo una diferencia significativa en el peso de los grupos, donde los pacientes sobrevivientes presentaron mayor peso al nacer. En el 54.93% la hipertensión fue primaria y en el 45.07% secundaria. La intubación endotraqueal aumentó 1.2 veces el riesgo de mortalidad, el uso de politerapia no disminuyó el riesgo de mortalidad. Dentro de las complicaciones el 88.1% desarrolló displasia pulmonar, no se encontró diferencia en la presencia de displasia.  Conclusión: La HPPRN se asoció a una alta morbimortalidad en los recién nacidos, los sobrevivientes tuvieron mayor peso, la intubación aumentó el riesgo de mortalidad, no hubo diferencias en la terapia farmacológica. El 88% desarrolló displasia broncopulmonar. La mortalidad de presentó en el 38%.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) occurs in 2 to 6 out of 1,000 live newborns, with mortality between 4 and 33%.  Objective: To learn the frequency, evolution and morbidity of the disease.  Material and method: Of 71 patients the sample was divided into two groups, Group A: 44 (61.97%) surviving patients and Group B: 27 (38%) deceased. Standard percentages, averages and deviations were calculated, in addition to Student’s T, Square Chi and OR IC95%.  Results: There was a significant difference in the weight of the groups, where surviving patients had greater birth weight. In 54.93% hypertension was primary and 45.07% secondary. Endotracheal intubation increased 1.2 times the risk of mortality, the use of polytherapy does not decrease the risk of mortality. Within complications 88.1% pulmonary dysplasia development, there was no difference in the presence of dysplasia.  Conclusion: PPHN was associated with high morbidity in newborns, survivors were more weight, intubation increased the risk of mortality, there were no differences in pharmacological therapy. 88% developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Mortality occurred at 38%.]]></p></abstract>
