Estos rasgos dificultan su uso potencial como agente de control biológico de plagas.  Objetivo:  Evaluar fuentes de proteína vegetal y animal, solas o en combinación con medios comerciales sobre el crecimiento micelial y producción de conidios; así como fuentes de nitrógeno y surfactantes sobre la germinación de conidios de H. citriformis.  Métodos:  El crecimiento micelial y producción de conidios se evaluó en los medios papa dextrosa agar (PDA), Sabouraud dextrosa agar (SDA) y a base de soya, quínoa, lenteja y atún comercial enlatado. La germinación de conidios se evaluó en agua, extracto de levadura, levadura comercial, nitrato de sodio y dos surfactantes.  Resultados y conclusiones:  El crecimiento radial de H. citriformis en medios sintéticos fue superior y la mayor producción de conidios ocurrió en agar con quínoa. La combinación de PDA con infusión de quínoa produjo la mayor cantidad de conidios. El extracto de levadura incrementó 54 % la germinación con respecto al testigo en agua, así como superior a NaNO3 y surfactantes. Concentraciones menores del extracto de levadura disminuyeron la germinación de conidios. La quínoa mejoró la producción de conidios y el extracto de levadura su germinación.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Hirsutella citriformis grows and germinates slowly and produces few conidia with respect to other entomopathogenic fungi. These traits hinder its potential use as a pest biological control agent.  Objective:  Evaluate effects on H. citriformis mycelial growth, spore production and germination from different vegetable and animal protein sources, alone or in combination with commercial media, as well as nitrogen sources and surfactants.  Methods:  Mycelial growth and conidia production were evaluated in potato dextrose agar (PDA), Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA), and media based on soybean, quinoa, lentil and commercial canned tuna. Spore germination was evaluated in water, yeast extract, commercial yeast, sodium nitrate and two surfactants.  Results and conclusions:  Radial growth of H. citriformis in synthetic media was higher than the rest of the treatments and the highest spore production occurred in agar with quinoa. The combination of PDA with quinoa infusion produced the largest number of spores. Yeast extract increased germination by 54 % with respect to the control in water, which was also superior to the use of NaNO3 and surfactants. Minor concentrations of yeast extract decreased spore germination. Quinoa improved H. citriformis conidia production and yeast extract its conidia germination.]]></p></abstract>
