Recientemente, reportes epidemiológicos asocian una disminución del riesgo de cáncer en pacientes que utilizan metformina como tratamiento, fármaco ampliamente utilizado y de primera elección en el tratamiento de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Diversos estudios han mostrado utilidad terapéutica de la metformina en tumores malignos como el cáncer de mama, hepatocarcinoma, cáncer gástrico y también el cáncer de próstata, actualmente muchos de ellos se han enfocado en determinar las vías de señalización por las cuales la metformina ejerce sus efectos antitumorales como la activación de la cinasa activada por monofosfato de adenina, inhibición de la diana de rapamicina en células de mamífero e inhibición del factor de crecimiento semejante a la insulina tipo 1, entre otros. La investigación sobre el tema es alentadora, posicionando la metformina como buen candidato como agente preventivo o para utilizarse en el cáncer de próstata como monoterapia o en combinación con otros fármacos quimioterapéuticos. La bibliografía respalda el concepto de quimioterapia con bases moleculares racionales.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Prostate cancer has positioned itself as the most frequent cancer in men worldwide. Recently, epidemiological reports have associated a decrease in cancer risk in patients who use metformin as treatment, a widely used first line drug in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Several studies have shown its therapeutic utility in various tumors such as hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, gastric cancer and also prostate cancer. Many of them have focused on determining the signaling pathways by which metformin can boast antitumor effects such as, for example, the activation of activated protein kinase, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition inhibition and insulin-like growth factor-1 inhibition, among others. Research on the subject is encouraging, accepting metformin as a good candidate to be used in prostate cancer for prevention as well as monotherapy or in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs. The bibliography supports the concept of chemotherapy with molecular rational bases.]]></p></abstract>
