</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract The use of marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes is as old as man himself. Marijuana is smoked by its hallucinogenic properties. The most important product is obtained from the plant Cannabis Sativa, which grows around the world. Between 9.5% and 27% of women pregnant in the United States of North America, use marijuana. 90% of women who consume any drugs is in reproductive age. Marijuana cigar contains as well as carbon monoxide, carcinogen, some of them in high concentrations. The delta-9-tetra-hydro-cannabinol (THC) enters the blood through the lungs by inhaled smoke, it is estimated that approximately 50% of THC is absorbed through the lungs and hence direct to the blood. THC freely crosses the placenta through which it primarily affects the fetus. One of the main consequences of the ingestion of these substances is, decrease the utero-placental perfusion and thus a restriction on the growth of the product, which can affect the axis hormonal pituitary-gland adrenal and thereby altered production of hormones with implications for fertility. Therefore the most common is to find products of low weight at birth or preterm birth. The use of marijuana during pregnancy also is associated with an increase in the risk of neurobehavioral problems in the product, as THC and other cannabinoids blend and alter the endogenous system, making newborn to develop significant problems of attention, memory and use of cognitive skills. Much has been discussed on congenital malformations produced by marijuana, there is still little clear opinions in this regard.
</abstract>
