Los estudios publicados sobre Vieja melanura consideran aspectos poblacionales y no abordan lo referente a su reproducción, útil para planes de gestión pesquera y acuícola. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la ontogenia inicial de la especie hasta la etapa juvenil en condiciones controladas. Todas las descripciones se basaron en datos morfométricos y mirísticos; siguiendo métodos estándar. Los huevos fertilizados midieron en promedio 2.38 mm diámetro, las larvas recién eclosionadas de 3.80 mm de LT, las cuales eclosionaron a partir 14 h. La etapa de flexión final en la larva ocurrió a partir de los 6 días posteclosión, con el saco vitelino reabsorbido en un 95%. Las larvas en etapa de post-flexión midieron en promedio 8.45 mm de LT. Los prejuvenil de 15.70 mm de LT y del juvenil fue de 23.65 mm, a los 35 dpe.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT. Previous studies of Vieja melanura consider population aspects, without addressing reproductive references, which are useful for fisheries and aquaculture management plans. The objective of this study was to determine the initial ontogeny of the species up to the juvenile stage under controlled conditions. All descriptions were based on morphometric and myristic data; following standard methods. The fertilized eggs measured an average of 2.38 mm in diameter, the newly hatched larvae of 3.80 mm of TL, which hatched after 14 h. The final flexion stage in the larva occurred 6 days after hatch, and the yolk sac was 95% reabsorbed. The larvae in the post-flexion stage measured an average of 8.45 mm TL. Pre-juvenile 15.70 mm TL and juvenile was 23.65 mm at 35 dph.]]></p></abstract>
