Questions: Can we identify a specific and differentiated leaf chemical variation of seven coexisting legume species within the hyper-diverse tropical semi-desert? Are these differences related to their phylogeny?  Studied species: Vachellia constricta, Parkinsonia praecox, Mimosa luisana, Neltuma laevigata, Vachellia campechiana, Vachellia bilimekii, and Senna wislizeni.  Study site and date: Zapotitlán Salinas Valley in Mexico (August 2020).  Methods: For each species we assessed nine foliar elements (hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc). We constructed a phylogenetic tree from sequences of the GenBank database selecting the marker trnL chloroplast intron. Differences were assessed performing ANOVA, Principal Component Analysis and Spearman&#8217;s multiple correlation analyses.  Results: Leaf chemical variation exhibited greater differentiation in phosphorus (associated to nucleic acids, protein construction and rapid growth rate), calcium and potassium (associated to structure and photosynthesis), and iron and zinc (associated to enzymes). Leaf chemical variation of more ancestral species displayed elevated concentrations of calcium and potassium, whereas most derived species exhibited higher carbon and iron concentrations. Species of the same genus showed less differences compared to more distant species.  Conclusions: The foliar elemental composition may be a fingerprint trait of the ecological and evolutionary history of these legumes, in relation to nutrient assimilation and acquisition, and probably constitute a mechanism of coexistence.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes: Se ha sugerido que la diferenciación de nichos podría explicar la coexistencia de especies en comunidades vegetales tropicales hiper-diversas.  Preguntas: ¿Podemos diferenciar la composición química elemental foliar de siete especies de leguminosas que coexisten en un semi-desierto tropical hiperdiverso? ¿Estas diferencias están relacionadas con su filogenia?  Especies estudiadas: Vachellia constricta, Parkinsonia praecox, Mimosa luisana, Neltuma laevigata, Vachellia campechiana, Vachellia bilimekii y Senna wislizeni.  Sitio y fechas de estudio: Valle de Zapotitlán Salinas en México (agosto de 2020).  Métodos: Para cada especie se evaluaron nueve elementos foliares, y se construyó un árbol filogenético a partir de secuencias de la base de datos GenBank seleccionando el marcador trnL intrón cloroplástico. Las diferencias se evaluaron realizando análisis de varianza, componentes principales y un análisis de correlación múltiple de Spearman.  Resultados: Las variaciones químicas foliares exhibieron una mayor diferenciación en el fósforo (asociado a ácidos nucleicos, construcción de proteínas y tasa de crecimiento rápido), calcio y potasio (asociados a estructura y fotosíntesis), y hierro y zinc (asociados a enzimas). La variación química foliar en especies más ancestrales mostró concentraciones elevadas de calcio y potasio, mientras que para las especies más derivadas se observaron concentraciones más altas de carbono y hierro. Las especies del mismo género mostraron menor diferencia en comparación con especies más distantes.  Conclusiones: La composición elemental foliar puede ser un rasgo, a manera de huella digital de la historia ecológica y evolutiva de estas leguminosas, relacionado probablemente con asimilación y adquisición de nutrimentos, y probablemente como mecanismo de coexistencia.]]></p></abstract>
