Understanding how fragmentation impacts plant communities is central for tropical conservation.  Questions:  i) How does species richness vary across a range of fragment sizes, and does it vary with plant size-structure? ii) how are species composition and floristic similarity affected by forest fragmentation? iii) does habitat fragmentation affect the representation of species with different life-history and regeneration patterns?  Studied species:  We sampled overall plant communities and calculated diversity metrics of mature-forest and light-demanding species, considering plants of different size-categories (defined by diameter at breast height, DBH).  Study site:  This study was carried out at Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico, an area originally dominated by extensive evergreen tropical forest, but currently highly fragmented  Methods:  We sampled plants in five forest fragments representing (2 - 36 ha), a large patch of continuous forest (700 ha). Within each site we established ten-50 × 2 m transects and registered all woody plants with DBH &gt; 1 cm.  Results:  Species richness declined as fragment size became. Such decline was significant considering all plants (DBH &gt; 1.0 cm) but became non-significant as plant size-category increased (DBH &gt; 2.5, or &gt; 10 cm.). Small fragments had distinguishable assemblages compared to continuous forest and also a reduction in the representation of mature-forest species, compared to light-demanding species.  Conclusions:  Our findings confirm that fragmentation affects tropical plant species diversity, but the effect is differential, depending on plant size-category and life history.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes:  Las selvas tropicales son afectadas por una alta deforestación y fragmentación. Comprender cómo estos procesos afectan a las comunidades de plantas es fundamental para la conservación de la biodiversidad.  Preguntas:  i) ¿Cambia la riqueza de especies en función al tamaño de fragmentos, y cómo varía dependiendo la estructura de clases diamétricas de plantas? ii) ¿Cambia la composición de especies y similitud florística con la fragmentación? iii) ¿Afecta la fragmentación la abundancia de especies con diferentes historias de vida y patrones de regeneración?  Especies de estudio:  Calculamos métricas de diversidad considerando plantas agrupadas en categorías de tamaño (diámetro a la altura del pecho, DAP) y sus requerimientos lumínicos.  Sitio de estudio:  Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, México. Área originalmente dominada por selva alta perennifolia pero altamente fragmentada.  Métodos:  Seleccionamos cinco fragmentos de selva (2.0 a 34.6 ha) y un parche extenso de selva (700 ha). En cada sitio establecimos diez transectos de 50 × 2 m, registrando las plantas leñosas con DAP &gt; 1 cm.  Resultados:  La riqueza de especies disminuyó a medida que el tamaño del fragmento disminuye considerando todas las plantas (DAP &gt; 1.0 cm), esta relación se diluye a medida aumenta el tamaño de las plantas (DAP &gt; 2.5, DAP &gt; 10.0 cm). Los fragmentos pequeños presentaron ensamblajes diferentes, dominaron especies demandantes de luz y menos especies tolerantes a la sombra.  Conclusiones:  Nuestros hallazgos confirman que la fragmentación afecta la diversidad de especies de plantas, de manera diferencial, dependiendo su categoría de tamaño e historia de vida.]]></p></abstract>
