Objectives:  To characterize the accumulation and decomposition of organic materials and flow of nutrients from standing litter in an urban dry tropical forest in a successional stage, after 10 years of abandonment of agricultural activities, and to determine the potential use of three species in future active restoration activities.  Materials and methods:  Standing litter samples were collected from a forest fragment in Santa Marta, Colombia, separating leaves, reproductive material, woody material and other residues. Additionally, leaves of three species of interest for ecological restoration (Albizia niopoides Spruce ex Benth., Cordia alba [Jacq.] Roem. &amp; Schult. and Machaerium milleflorum Dugand G. A.) were separated and Ca, Mg, K, N and P concentrations were determined.  Results and discussion:  Total standing litter was 8.3 Mg&#8729;ha-1 with a mean residence time of two years. The leaves represented 20 % of the standing litter, with a mean residence time of 1.4 years. Based on the decomposition constant (k  j = 0.73) and the rate of leaf litterfall, organic matter returns accounted for 3.4 Mg&#8729;ha-1&#8729;year-1. Leaf decomposition rate decreased in the following order C. alba &gt; M. milleflorum &gt; A. niopoides. P represented the greatest limitation with low release rates (0.1 to 1.2 kg&#8729;ha-1&#8729;year-1).  Conclusions:  The passive restoration strategy allowed reactivation of biogeochemical cycle via fine leaf litter. Cordia alba showed potential for inclusion in restoration activities, with lower values for leaf N/P ratio, and higher rates for leaf litterfall, litter decomposition and nutrient release.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  Las hojas del mantillo representan una fuente esencial de materia orgánica y nutrientes para dinamizar procesos biogeoquímicos a nivel de ecosistema.  Objetivos:  Caracterizar la acumulación y descomposición de materiales orgánicos y el flujo de nutrientes desde el mantillo en un bosque seco tropical urbano en estado de sucesión, tras 10 años de abandono de actividades agrícolas, y determinar el potencial de empleo de tres especies en actividades futuras de restauración activa.  Materiales y métodos:  En un fragmento de bosque de Santa Marta, Colombia, se colectaron muestras del mantillo separando hojas, material reproductivo, material leñoso y otros restos. Adicionalmente, se separaron las hojas de tres especies de interés para restauración ecológica (Albizia niopoides Spruce ex Benth., Cordia alba [Jacq.] Roem. &amp; Schult. y Machaerium milleflorum Dugand G. A.) y se determinaron las concentraciones de Ca, Mg, K, N y P.  Resultados y discusión:  El mantillo acumulado fue 8.3 Mg&#8729;ha-1 con un tiempo medio de residencia de dos años. Las hojas representaron 20 % del mantillo acumulado con un tiempo medio de residencia de 1.4 años. Con base en la constante de descomposición (k  j = 0.73) y la tasa de caída de hojas del dosel, los retornos de materia orgánica representaron 3.4 Mg&#8729;ha-1&#8729;año-1. La velocidad de descomposición de las hojas decreció en el orden C. alba &gt; M. milleflorum &gt; A. niopoides. El P representó la mayor limitación con tasas bajas de liberación (0.1 a 1.2 kg&#8729;ha-1&#8729;año-1).  Conclusiones:  La estrategia de restauración pasiva permitió la reactivación del ciclo biogeoquímico vía hojarasca fina. Cordia alba mostró potencial para su inclusión en actividades de restauración con valores más bajos en la relación N/P de la hojarasca foliar, así como tasas altas de liberación de nutrientes y de producción y descomposición foliar.]]></p></abstract>
