Objective:  To study the effect of livestock on the early stages of regeneration of a queñoa (Polylepis australis Bitt.) forest.  Materials and methods:  Within a pure forest of P. australis at Parque Provincial Potrero de Yala, Jujuy, Argentina, densities of seedlings (&#706;1 year) and saplings (&#707;1 year and &#706;30 cm) were measured in the presence (0.23 heads&#8729;ha-1) and absence of livestock, for a year. Linear mixed models (normal distribution) were adjusted for density of seedlings and saplings. Data was analyzed with a Chi-square test (&#967;2).  Results and discussion:  Presence of livestock had no impact on seedling density, but significantly decreased density of saplings (P &lt; 0.001); in areas without livestock (10.58 ± 6.64 individuals&#8729;m-2) was three times higher than with presence of livestock (3.17 ± 3.86 individuals&#8729;m-2). Difference in density of seedlings and saplings was significantly (P &lt; 0.001) over the years. This indicates that there is potential for natural regeneration, but livestock would affect stages after seedling emergence, representing a threat to the forest.  Conclusion:  This study provides important information for livestock management in mountain forests of P. australis. A long-term study of the effect of livestock on seedling and sapling density, and over the entire distribution range, is needed.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción:  Los bosquecillos de Polylepis son ecosistemas declarados con prioridad de conservación y amenazados por efectos antrópicos; la ganadería extensiva es uno de los disturbios más frecuentes.  Objetivo:  Determinar el efecto del ganado sobre las primeras etapas de regeneración de un bosque de queñoa (Polylepis australis Bitt.).  Materiales y métodos:  Dentro de un bosque puro de P. australis en el Parque Provincial Potrero de Yala, Jujuy, Argentina, se midieron las densidades de plántulas (&#706;1 año) y renovales (&#707;1 año y &#706;30 cm) en presencia (0.23 cabezas&#8729;ha-1) y ausencia del ganado, durante un año. Modelos lineales mixtos de distribución normal se ajustaron para la densidad de plántulas y renovales. Los datos se analizaron con una prueba de Chi-cuadrado (&#967;2).  Resultados y discusión:  La presencia del ganado no afectó la densidad de plántulas, pero sí disminuyó significativamente la densidad de renovales (P &lt; 0.001); en zonas sin ganado (10.58 ± 6.64 individuos&#8729;m-2) fue tres veces mayor que con presencia (3.17 ± 3.86 individuos&#8729;m-2). La diferencia en la densidad de plántulas y renovales fue significativa (P &lt; 0.001) a lo largo del tiempo. Esto indica que existe potencial para la regeneración natural, pero el ganado afectaría las etapas posteriores a la emergencia de plántulas, significando una amenaza para el bosque.  Conclusión:  El estudio aporta información importante para el manejo del ganado en los bosques montanos de P. australis. El estudio a largo plazo del efecto del ganado sobre la densidad de plántulas y renovales, y en todo el rango de distribución, es necesario.]]></p></abstract>
