The present study related soil water content and evaporative demand components (air temperature, relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit) and precipitation with water potential in trees and shrubs of native species from northeastern Mexico: Prosopis laevigata (Fabaceae), Cordia boissieri (Boraginaceae), Helietta parvifolia (Rutaceae), and Karwinskia humboldtiana (Rhamnaceae). Water potentials were determined between August and October 2016 at 15 days-intervals at predawn and midday. Maximum and minimum seasonal predawn values ranged from -1.29 MPa (C. boissieri) to -5.10 MPa (H. parvifolia). At midday, it varied from -1.53 MPa (P. laevigata) to -4.0 MPa (K. humboldtiana). Water potentials at predawn and midday showed significant correlations with soil water content. In contrast, a negative relationship was observed with air temperature and vapor pressure deficit. On a diurnal basis, the species showed a typical pattern of variation in diurnal water potential, where it decreased from maximum values at predawn and reached minimum values at noon. This pattern was associated to evaporative demand components such as vapor pressure deficit, relative humidity, and temperature. Under low soil water availability, P. laevigata appeared to be the most drought tolerant species, since it showed less water stress compared to the remaining species.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen En la vida de las plantas, el déficit hídrico es frecuente, ya que la disponibilidad hídrica es el primer factor limitante del crecimiento y del rendimiento de las plantas. El presente estudio relaciona el contenido de agua del suelo, los componentes de la demanda evaporativa (temperatura del aire, humedad relativa y déficit de presión de vapor) y precipitación con el potencial hídrico en especies arbóreas y arbustivas nativas del noreste de México: Prosopis laevigata (Fabaceae), Cordia boissieri (Boraginaceae), Helietta parvifolia (Rutaceae) y Karwinskia humboldtiana (Rhamnaceae). Los potenciales hídricos se determinaron antes del amanecer y al mediodía entre agosto y octubre de 2016 a intervalos de 15 días. Los valores máximos y mínimos estacionales antes del amanecer fluctuaron entre -1.29 MPa (C. boissieri) y -5.10 MPa (H. parvifolia). Al mediodía, variaron de -1.53 MPa (P. laevigata) a -4.0 MPa (K. humboldtiana). Los potenciales antes del amanecer y al mediodía mostraron correlaciones significativas con el contenido de agua en el suelo. En cambio, se observó una relación negativa con la temperatura del aire y el déficit de presión de vapor. Sobre una base diurna, las especies mostraron un patrón típico de variación en el potencial hídrico diurno, donde disminuyeron de los valores máximos antes del amanecer y alcanzó valores mínimos al mediodía. Este patrón se asoció a los componentes de demanda evaporativa como son el déficit de presión de vapor, humedad relativa y la temperatura. Con una disponibilidad de agua baja en el suelo, P. laevigata podría ser la especie más tolerante a la sequía, ya que mostró un menor estrés hídrico en comparación con las especies restantes.]]></p></abstract>
