Comparamos con puntos fijos de conteo, la riqueza y la composición de aves asociadas a tres tipos de humedales: presa, río y arroyo, en la cuenca del río Grijalva. Registramos 170 especies: 134 terrestres y 36 acuáticas. Tanto la riqueza como la similitud de aves en el humedal de la presa fueron menores respecto a los humedales del arroyo y río. Sin embargo, los resultados muestran que los humedales modificados (presa) son importantes para la riqueza de las aves de la región. A pesar de su baja diversidad, la presa tiene especies acuáticas y migratorias diferentes a los otros humedales. Aunque la similitud de especies entre los tres tipos de humedal es baja (32% en promedio), en conjunto aumentan la diversidad de la comunidad a nivel regional. Si bien el embalse de la presa ha reducido el hábitat original de muchas aves terrestres, este ambiente favorece las especies acuáticas. Por tanto, es necesario evaluar y reconocer el aporte de los humedales para el mantenimiento de la diversidad de aves regional a lo largo de la cuenca del río Grijalva, y desarrollar actividades de manejo y conservación de los humedales modificados.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The transformation of riparian habitats due to hydroelectric dams is an action that causes loss of biodiversity. We compared with point counts the bird richness and community composition of three wetlands (dam, riverbank, and streams) on the Grijalva River basin. We recorded 170 species (134 terrestrial y 36 wetlands). Both species richness and bird community similarity of the dam were lower compared to the stream and river wetlands. Our results show that modified wetlands, such as dams, play an important role in regional bird species richness. Despite its low diversity, the dam supports a set of aquatic and migratory species that are different from those in the other two wetlands. Although the similarity of species among the three types of wetland is low (32% in average), together they increase the diversity of the regional community. Even though the dam reservoir has reduced the original habitat for many land birds, this environment favors the presence of aquatic species. Therefore, it is necessary to assess and recognize the contribution of wetlands to the maintenance of regional bird diversity throughout the Grijalva basin, and with this information to develop activities of management and conservation of modified wetlands.]]></p></abstract>
