La detección es limitada y las herramientas habituales requieren métodos invasivos y serológicos para clasificar.  Objetivo:  describir la importancia y aspectos esenciales de la impedancia bioeléctrica como una herramienta práctica para la detección de síndrome metabólico.  Material y métodos:  se realizó una revisión narrativa seleccionando los artículos que cubrían los siguientes criterios: antigüedad menor a 10 años, publicaciones en inglés y español con los siguientes términos: &#8220;impedancia bioeléctrica&#8221;, &#8220;síndrome metabólico&#8221;, &#8220;metabolic syndrome&#8221; y &#8220;bioelectric impedance&#8221;. Se utilizaron los siguientes motores de búsqueda: Google Academic y PubMed.  Resultados:  se revisaron 20 artículos que incluyeron revisiones narrativas, sistemáticas y ensayos clínicos. Varios estudios demostraron la utilidad de la impedancia bioeléctrica como herramienta de tamizaje, por cada cuartil de aumento de la masa muscular disminuye la probabilidad de síndrome metabólico en 25% y la utilidad de la relación de grasa-músculo mediante bioimpedancia como una herramienta de detección temprana.  Conclusiones:  la bioimpedancia para la detección de pacientes con síndrome metabólico aún se encuentra en estudio. Herramienta utilizada en otras patologías con resultados prometedores. La evidencia actual orienta a que este método debe ser considerado para toma de decisiones futuras.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Introduction:  metabolic syndrome is essential in incidence and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Detection is limited and the usual tools require invasive and serological methods for classification.  Objective:  to describe the importance and essential aspects of bioelectrical impedance as a practical tool for the detection of metabolic syndrome.  Material and methods:  a narrative review was carried out selecting articles that met the following criteria: Age less than 10 years, publications in English and Spanish with the following terms: &#8220;bioelectrical impedance&#8221;, &#8220;metabolic syndrome&#8221;, &#8220;metabolic syndrome&#8221; and &#8220;bioelectric impedance&#8221;. The following search engines were used: Google Academic and PubMed.  Results:  twenty articles were reviewed including narrative reviews, systematic reviews, and clinical trials. Several studies demonstrated the usefulness of bioelectric impedance as a screening tool, per quartile increase in muscle mass decreases the likelihood of metabolic syndrome by 25% and the usefulness of fat-to-muscle ratio by bioimpedance as an early detection tool.  Conclusions:  bioimpedance for the detection of patients with metabolic syndrome is still under study. This tool has been used in other pathologies with promising results. Current evidence suggests that this method should be considered for future decision making.]]></p></abstract>
